I hate to do a shout-out thread for you but I wasn't sure if you would go back to the Costco thread.
You said your MD would prefer that you eat grass fed beef but that it was hard to find. Living where you do, you must have a Safeway or Vons grocery store? They do carry some grass fed beef cuts. I made burgers tonight using one that is produced by The Butcher's Cut, 85/15, and despite those numbers, there was no fat in the pan. Delicious too.
I've seen several cuts of beef that are labeled grass fed at my Vons. The burger meat I bought is pre-packaged in vacuum packed sealed plastic. The other cuts are in their regular Styrofoam packaging, mixed in with their 'regular' meats. Not a huge selection, but it's better than nothing!

Hi Noel
Try Trader Joe's or Whole Foods, Lassens, or any other whole food/health store. I believe the grass fed beef comes from New Zealand but I can't be exact on that.
Kdgn - didn't mean to jump your thread.

Noel, I specifically looked for the grass fed beef today at Vons. Open Nature, grass fed, USA. The Butcher's Cut hamburger was New Zealand. They also have lamb from New Zealand and some other cuts of beef.
Several cuts of the Open Nature grass fed beef, including beef tenderloin-

Hi kdgn!
Thank you for thinking of me
We don't have Vons and haven't found grass fed beef at our Safeways. We can find it as ground beef at Trader Joe's and, the other day, I saw steaks at Costco that were labeled grass fed. It was right after St. Patrick's Day and I figured I'd already had more beef than usual so I'd wait until the next trip.
Like I said on the Wegman's line, imo we don't have great stores around here. The couple of Whole Foods we do have are difficult to get to. We have Lucky and Safeway but Safeway is being sold. Both have lost a lot of business to TJoe's and Costco, but I feel sure that wouldn't happen to a Wegman's.

Hi LR
We're lucky to have local grass fed beef. There are some great farms around here that are health oriented.

kdgn -
Do you get fresh lamb etc, from New Zealand? I've only found it frozen.

Noel, the lamb I saw today was not frozen but it was in a vacuum packed bag. There was no sign that said previously frozen.
Vons is Safeway. Look a little harder because the grass fed beef is hard to find. It's not delineated by a sign, separate barriers or anything. I was looking at one beef item, looked to the side and there they were. If all else fails, ask to speak to the meat manager. From discussions with my sibling in another state that only has Safeway, the available products appear to be the same or very similar. We have Safeway brands in the store-
I did talk to a couple of the managers about the sale. They had been told not a lot will change; the sale still has to be approved by the government. What they did say was that they hoped they would be able to increase the variety of brands that they carry. That would be nice!!

Good suggestion, I'll ask the manager.
The only thing we've been told about the Safeway sale is that the new stores will be modeled after Trader Joe's. I can't even imagine that. That was tried out here by a British company and it failed.
I checked Vons in the Bay Area and all that comes up are Safeway stores. I know I have seem them in the Sacramento area, but that was years ago. Also Ralphs, they have Ralphs up there.
