Re: No mail Monday

[ Edited ]

Glad you mentioned this.  I couldn't remember for sure.

Bus picked the kids up for school here today.  That's why I wasn't sure about the mail.

Columbus Day in the Philly area is always fun. You typically get some idiots who decide they're going to deface or tear down the Christopher Columbus statue in South Philly while the Italian Americans in the area rally around to defend the statue. So far, the Italian Americans in South Philly have won the fight. And it hasn't been all that close of a fight. It's something of a yearly tradition these days. Idiots want the statue gone and the Italian American community says, no.

@dimin   Interesting?  What state are they in?

I don't remember when Columbus Day became one of the Monday holidays, but I know once that happened, nothing except supermarkets and general retail was open.  I was in NY by then.

I don't remember what PA was doing in the 1940's and 50's when I was in school although I do recall that at some point, Thanksgiving weekend became a 5-day break because the Monday after was the beginning of deer hunting season.  Probably still is, but someone who lives in PA would have to confirm that.

No surprises, the usual closings on Columbus Day.  I was surprised it was today, my 9 year old niece told me.  It's somewhat controversial here so it's not what it once was.

In my State it is called Columbus Day and Indigenous People's Day.  Some banks are open, some are not.  The Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ will be open and it depends on the Bank if they want to be open.  No School, no mail and no courts.

That's what my 9 year old niece told me last night.  And then she explained to me how Columbus's arrival affected the indigenous people.  Things I didn't learn about until I was in college.  Not much surprises me but that conversation did.

Idiots is kind of a strong word. We can't help the way we learned. All we can do is try and learn the truth, understand and accept it. Just saying...🤗
