NEVER press any numbers on these unknown automated recordings.....

i am not sure why people still pick up the phone anymore? i use my caller ID AND my answering machine to screen everything. if i dont know who it is i dont pick up. period.

I usually don't answer, but I was so darn curious to see who was on the other end because my caller ID showed "me" as the caller. My curiosity got the best of me, I just had to do it! {#emotions_dlg.biggrin}

I never answer the phone when it's a number I don't recognize. If no one leaves a msg then I google the # to see who it was. I never return calls and start yelling "stop calling me"!

That's an invitation to even more calls.

It is an invitation to more calls, and they're counting on people being curious about it or not being aware of the tricks and scams.

The recent "one-ring" scam to cell phones was based solely on the receiver's curiosity. Since there was just one ring, the person had to call the number back if they wanted to find out what it was . . . and the call-back resulted enormous charges instantly added to the victim's phone bill.

You all are right...no more answering unknown callers.....I'll let them go to the answering service. It just amazes me the lengths that these scammers go to to try to get victims....{#emotions_dlg.sad}

hhmm. I had my own number on my caller ID the other day. I wasn't home, so it went to voice mail and they hung up.

Re: New ( maybe ) phone scammer trick.......

Reporting these scammers to the FTC for violating the Do Not Call List is a joke. These scammers are so far ahead of the govt. in technology that there is no way the govt can catch them. Only legitimate businesses abide by the Do Not Call Registry. The scammers just ignore it knowing they can't be caught. But what really gets me is that these scams are obviously working and making money or these scams would not continue. So, who are the people falling for these ploys? Are there really people in our country today who fall for these scams? Don't these people read or listen to the news programs that warn about these sort of rip off's?

Re: New ( maybe ) phone scammer trick.......

I got the call here at work just last Friday where the guy says he's a certified Microsoft technician. Yeah, and I'm the queen of England. I have no choice but to answer the phone and these are getting more frequent. That was the first time for that one, but I'd read about it.

Re: New ( maybe ) phone scammer trick.......

this is why we got rid of our landline years ago! the only time it rang was either a wrong number or someone (human or machine) trying to sell us something! we would look at the caller ID and keep letting it ring because we all have cellphones and anyone we wanted to be in contact knew that was how to reach us.

This all started when I allowed Verizon to publish my phone number years ago in order to avoid a monthly payment of $7.95. :-(

Re: New ( maybe ) phone scammer trick.......

I got a call which registered on my caller ID as a local call from a local church. I answered and it was a scammer's call. Not sure how they did this, but I don't answer them any longer. I think I've had 4 or 5 calls from that church's number.

Re: New ( maybe ) phone scammer trick.......

a couple weeks ago for 2 days in a row I had voice messages left by Officer Julie Smith from the IRS telling me not to ignore her call and it was important I contact her immediately or have my lawyer call..../good grief!!!!.....we have an unlisted number....I was furious....bad enough to get robo calls but this urgent fake voice message was the topping on the cake for me....so I called back (some guy answered saying her was officer blah blah....and told him NEVER call my number again or they WILL be hearing from my lawyer....so far they have not called again.
