@LilacTree

nyc has SCRIE where your rent is topped at the current rent, and the city subsidizes the rest, if you are a senior.  There is also section 8 subsidized housing.  My rent increases $50 every 2 years..........

Wow!  Not sure where you live, but that sounds like a horrific amount of rent, even before the increase.  I'm guessing it must be a large apartment.  Or maybe I've just been away from the rental scene for too long!  Good luck with your decision.

Just a random sampling of 2 br apartments:

LA avg $3000 2 br
Phoenix $1100
Indianapolis $900
Albuquerque $900
San Jose $3000
SF $4500
Des Moines $1000

I live in NJ and it's not a large apartment.  Just two bedrooms and two baths.  It's very nice though, but it's expensive to live anywhere on the east coast.

The average one-bedroom apartment in my city costs around $1200 / mo. for rent alone. Then add the cost of the utilities. A three-bedroom house here rents for about $2000 on average.

It's expensive to rent an apartment in NJ that is safe, clean and updated.

Then on top of the rent for the human, most places charge a monthly rent for your four legged roommate.

My daughter pays an extra $25 a month for her cat Buddy and she also had to pay a $300 non-refundable pet deposit for him on top of her security deposit.

Not this increase, but I assume it's going to be as much or more next year, so I'm in the process of getting on some gov-assisted lists.  So far the closest time frame is one to two year wait.

Yes it is.  Our little "Bobby" is $15 extra a month, and I think the deposit was $175.  I don't remember, but it's refundable if anything happens to him, so we didn't think that was a bad deal.

The wait lists in SoCal are 2+ years. There are people who sign up 2 years before they plan to retire.
