@cherry......How about adding herring at midnight.....  I will be having mine before that.

I have heard about black eyed peas on New Year's Day.  But not one of my favorite things to eat.

@Starpolisher......my usual house cleaning day is on Tuesday every other week.  So tomorrow is my day.  Yes, on New Year's Day.  She will be here at 10:00 am.  Her normal time for coming is the evening after she gets home from work.  But since she is off tomorrow, will be doing it much earlier.  This is fine with me.  Good way to start the new year.

And Happy New Year to you too.......

My Irish neighbor sends her black haired husband ,out for first footing ,at midnight. It is good luck, if the first person that enters the house, has dark hair.

I always heard to have pork and sauerkraut on NY day for good luck.  Never did it tho.  I like it, just never did it.

I don't believe in superstitions or things like that - the only thing I make sure of on New Year's is spending it with those I love.

So maybe that is a superstition.  LOL

When I was growing up my Ma gave each of us (in a plastic baggie) a piece of bread, salt and some coins and told us to put them under our mattress on NYE.

Also, open the door and sweep out.  We usually kept clean floors so there was rarely anything to sweep out, however, at  midnight the door was open and we were sweeping, lol.

I've heard of the dark haired man with silver before.  I remember one year our neighbor was walking down to wish my parents a happy new year.  He was dark haired.  He was the first visitor to the house and I opened the upstairs window and said, Will, wait a minute.  I ran downstairs and grabbed a spoon (the only silver I could think of ) and said, do me a favor.  I'm going to toss the spoon on the ground, can you bring it into the house with you?  He laughed and said okay.  I said, I know I'm weird, humor me.

I never heard of any of those.  My mother used to say avoid bad thoughts and anger on New Years Day because if you start the year that way; you will end it that way.

We have the first footer that brings the salt, bread, coins and evergreen.

We also eat the pork, greens. black eyed peas in hoppin john and cornbread.

I am surprised nobody said the pot banging or midnight cacophony.

I remember in years past we did some virtual pot banging here.

I am sure to follow the don't do laundry on the First.
