Do people in your neighborhood set off fireworks (and guns) on New Years Eve? They do in mine and it's very annoying. First of all, private fireworks are banned in my city; and secondly, it's frightens the C#@p (literally) out of my dogs. My one poor dog was trembling so badly I couldn't calm him down and thought he was going to stroke out. And if you call the police to report it, you are told they have to be "caught in the act" for them to do anything about it even though it's
ILLEGAL to begin with.

@Magicrat : Totally agree and understand. My DH is retired military with PTSD and everyone in the neighbourhood knows this.
They start 2 days before and continue a week after. Neighbors in front,side and back of us. This year was like more powerful and stronger.
I had better windows installed, wooden blinds and thick remote controlled window shades: all this shut out the sights from the fireworks but sadly not the horrible sound. We increase the tv volume but still hear the fireworks.

Hi @Magicrat
Are you saying, they fire off *GUNS* where you are, on NYEve??

No, but prior to a veteran moving here, they did. It's probably too late now that the dogs are no longer puppies.
However, puppies can be desensitized. When loud noise happens, owners should behave pleased and excited and give a treat to the dog ever time another fire work or gun goes off. Dogs look to their owners to know if it's a threat or a good thing.

The residents in my neighborhood have 'aged out' of fireworks celebrations, even on July 4th. Those of us who own firearms believe in behaving legally and responsibly.

@deepwaterdotter I heard a few begin at midnight. Fortunately for us it started raining quite hard and that was the end of that lol...

@Magicrat. They're usually pretty bad here but this year was unusually quiet. There were 3 or 4 pops in the evening and about 10 minutes of it at midnight. That was it.
Albuquerque has a big problem with people shooting guns up into the air but they now have gunshot detectors all over town so they have reduced the problem. I think it's a Hispanic tradition. We had a child shot and injured who was being held in her parent's arms. What goes up must come down.

@occasionalrain. Theoretically.
