I know this is a common situation, but we have just adopted a nine-week hold neutered black/white/gray male kitten from the Humane Society. He is playful, affectionate, hasn't missed even once with his litter box, sleeps peacefully all night in his little bed......an adorable and model kitten, even if he does try to eat our houseplants and climb to places he shouldn't be. We adopted him about three months after losing our previous neutered male cat to illness. After waiting a while we decided to bring in the new kitten to be company for our eight year old spayed female, who got along fine with our previous cat.
Problem is, so far (about a week and a half in) older cat hates the kitten. We're keeping them separated most of the time and just allowing them to see each other or be in the same room for short periods with supervision. Old cat fixes her eyes on the new little guy and hisses, shows her teeth, and yowls most menacingly. She hasn't tried to "jump" him or hurt him, but we're wondering if there's anything we can do to help her adjust. You can tell the little guy would like to play with her, but she's not havin' any. I guess this just takes time?
