Re: New California Variant. More transmissible.

Which spring?  Last spring, this spring?

We have another month to go before spring is officially here.

I am very concerned about what I'm hearing about this California variant. As I've posted, we had our second dose on Sunday. I was planning on resuming in-store grocery shopping in two weeks. Now I just don't know what to think. Obviously, the concern is this variant's ability to bypass antibodies.

@suzyQ3 I know you will keep posted on your local news about the California variant but also continue to monitor local transmission in your area.  You were vaccinated with a mRNA vaccine which has thu far proven to be pretty successful at covering the different variants that have emerged.

Obviously, they are till evaluating the mRNA vaccines, but honestly this type of vaccine has thus far turned out to be fairly impressive.

If local transmission rates remain stable or decline along with waiting a minimum of 10 days after your 2nd dose, you would probably be ok going to the grocery while still wearing a mask, following social distance guidelines, etc.  Of course if data comes out that says the vaccine doesn't protect against the California variant, then obviously all that is a moot point.

Hang in there!

So it goes without saying....self distancing...double mask....wash your hands...do not believe you can let your guard done even with a vaccination .  I plane to continue doing this as long as necessary.

You're absolutely right but it seems like they must be talking about this year.

Maybe it's because it seems like spring in CA? Pink and white flowers are popping out on the trees everywhere. Hard to remember it's still winter here.

@SusieQ_2, if it becomes dominant, I'm afraid that it will invariably show up elsewhere. In fact, it may have already.

I'm sure it's made it's way to many places and made many people very happy  @suzyQ3 .

On a serious note, I totally understand your concern. All I can say is that I'm not yet eligible for the vaccination but will continue to shop and do errands following all the safety guidelines we've been given. So far so good!

I'm very happy you've had both doses now! Even so, you need to do what's best for you and yours.

@SusieQ_2, if you're not eligible yet, then you are but a youngster compared to me. :-) I am very healthy, but I am 71 and my husband is 74. So I have a bit more to worry about. The very high percentages that the vaccines tout don't apply to us.

I find it strange that some posts are more upset about other people worrying than they are about a new strain of Covid. I think most of us can manage worry and anxiety just fine and prefer to know what is going on so we can be informed.

But I want to know very soon, as I have marked my calendar ten days out from out second dose. If you have any sway, could you tell them to hurry the heck up, please? Oops, my privilege is showing. :-)

Re: New California Variant. More transmissible.

@pitdakota,

The latest info I've read in many places says it would be 2 weeks after first vaccine to reach any effectiveness or protection and 7 days, (not 2 weeks as previously recommended) after 2nd vaccine to reach 95% effectiveness.

I guess info changes every day,

including this new variant so its hard to tell.

What do you think?

@on the bay  Generally, the information for mRNA vaccines is that maximum immunity is achieved anywhere from 7 days to 2 weeks after the 2nd vaccination.

It will not be a one size fits all for every single individual.  But generally one could surmise that 10 days after your 2nd dose you should have a really high level of immunity.
