Just that attitude of not caring.........
Enough said.
shoekitty said, I call it oppositional defiant personality disorder. It's a strong sense of entitlement, yes but to me it is the oppositional disorder. People with this will fight to the bitter end to prove their point, even if the know they have been disproved. A distain for authority, government and being told what to do is covering up insecurity, and fear of things changing. Just MHO
Or it's just people who don't believe the 'science' anymore. They don't trust the authorities and that there aren't agendas behind everything they are told. They know the 'science' and authorities are either not being truthful and fully forth coming most of the time or simply don't really know what they are doing. This entire time, the scenario has changed repeatedly(remember when no one needed a mask and they were mocking the public for wanting them? Remember when this was all about just washing your hands and you'd be fine?).
People are tired of the 'rules' only applying to some people in some situations. They are fed up with the idea that some things can be open and encouraged to be, while very similar type things should not or are not to be. They are done with participating willingly or forcibly while in one scenario something is enforced, and other's it is not only not enforced, but not even shamed or noticed (think the mass gatherings of protesters with no masks).
I think disdain for authority has been brought on by the authorities, and is playing out this year in many ways and places, this one included.
I CHOOSE to wear a mask when in public buildings, many are not. I truly don't know how much it is really helping, but I'm willing to do it in case it is. I'm trying to respect the rights and decisions of others not to at this point, and when I'm somewhere that I feel there are too many people too close and not wearing them, I don't stay there.
I'd say in my area, how many people you will see wearing masks depends on the day and time and where you are. Any given store, the most masks are early in the morning, and the later in the day the fewer I see.
And I see just as many 'old' people without them as younger ones. I'm actually shocked at the number of older people (and I use that term loosely, to be people who look to be 50 and up) I see in places with no masks, so many.
So I firmly disagree that everyone seen not wearing a mask is covering up insecurity and fear or has a fear of change. Some of them actually believe in rights and freedom to choose and freedom to not believe that what the 'experts' are telling us is accurate, and to listen to other 'experts' who say something different on the subject. It's beyond me how some behaviors are perceived as expressing ones individuality, having one's voice heard, exercising one's rights, while other similar behaviors, just by a different group, are seen as selfish, dangerous and to be held in contempt. Same understanding and acceptance of choice and freedoms needs to be applied to everyone.

Here's the thing.....
For those who insist, in every mask thread, that there is no real evidence that wearing one helps, and they will continue doing as they please, I ask - "What is the down side to wearing one?" Yes, it's uncomfortable, but if you believe there is even a slim chance they help, why not wear one? Unfortunately, we are at the mercy of our fellow citizens since there are many places it will just be too difficult to enforce this mandate. And no one better speak up if they value their life.

CA rocks!

@wvumountiefan Don't ask why, but Californians might be more willing t follow the ordinance. You have to have a mind set. On a whole we are probably more health conscience, and up to date on stats about Covid. Even people I know who aren't in the mask mode, will do it because they are asked, or t get something they need Then they rip it off when they leave.
They hand out expensive tickets for jay walking here , lol
as far as homeless go, we have our share if not more of them. Many stay at rescue missions ,sleep in camps, get meals at the church's . I have also seen homeless encampments with people masking up. I have heard downtown at salvation army the homeless will mask up to get their bag. But the people at church also know some are incapable of understanding, and they deal with that as well.
personally, I think the governor made it into law to give more protection to business when people refuse to mask up. They can get arrested. Or get fine and asked to leave. If masking up is a request, not an order it is an option not a requirement. It couldn't be enforced

Better soak up the love now CA residents. Wildfire season is coming and soon we'll have all the threads dedicated to wondering how anyone with an ounce of common sense would live in the pit of hell called California.
Trust me...it's coming! ![]()

@Tessa Mendoza I understand your concern, but I also agree with @Mominohio has made some good points also. When you see a politician wearing one and then when she steps up to the podium to talk, she pulls it down, or they wear it below their nose? They (specialists) have changed their minds so much, it’s hard to know what or who to believe. Then there are the massive amounts of people protesting (which peaceful protests are a right) and the majority are not wearing masks, nor social distancing. I don’t know what the answer is, as some days I don’t know what the question is..
IMO, this virus was here way before March, but that’s just my opinion...

'I don't know'..........It just seems curteous to be mindful.
Even before this situation, just be nice, cover our mouths when coughing when in stores, in church, near people/family.
Why spread a common cold or flu to others who are nearby. ?
I've even seen folks I know (who have pets) going around, shaking hands, etc., and then carve/slice a turkey (cooked, of course) and plate it.
I guess maybe they aren't thinking?
It's tough to really wonder why, and try to figure it all out.
Sometimes it's just is what it is.

p.s. I've said this from the very beginning:
It seems to me that wearing a mask (and keeping my hands clean) is better than not wearing one at all.
Why? I don't know. It just seems that, just in case I have even a common cold, why spread it around?
Just the way I think. Just the way my brain works.

@wvumountiefan, there is nothing wrong with this scenario. I have absolutely no doubt that the mic and podium are disinfected after each use; in fact, watching the local updates, I actually see the person who disinfects before the next speaker comes up.
