Nevada man first in US confirmed to have had two strains

[ Edited ]

A 25 year old Nevada man is the first confirmed U.S. case of reinfection. Both of his viruses were genetically sequenced and it has been determined that he had two different strains. His first case was relatively mild but his second case resulted in pneumonia and hospitalization. This makes four cases confirmed by genomic sequencing. You can find out more by searching for the report online in Reuters.

According to a Reuters, "Researchers at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine and the Nevada State Public Health Laboratory said they were able to show through sophisticated testing that the virus associated with each instance of the Reno man’s infection represented genetically different strains."

Re: Nevada man first in US confirmed to have had two strains

Viruses constantly mutate to be able to survive. And as has been pointed out, One never knows how COVID-19 will affect each individual. My daughters father-in-law and mother-in-law are not healthy people. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, overweight and diabetic. He contracted Covid at work...the only thing that clued him in to go see the doc was that he was feeling completely drained and had a low grade fever.  So the physician tested him for Covid and he was positive. However his symptoms never got any worse. His wife also contracted it (she’s homebound so he passed it to her) and again her symptoms were as mild as his. Both of them recovered fully with no further health issues.

Then you have 21 year old college athletes succumbing to it. I love my life and my family too much to gamble with something like this and Potentially pass it along. I wear a mask all day at work as required, am tested monthly, but will continue to wear the mask everywhere else probably for the coming year.  My hands are a shredded mess from hand sanitizer and hand washing, but it beats the alternative.

Getting it once is bad enough.  I wonder if he is a front line worker and exposed to the virus?

Good question.

They gave his age and all the symptoms (1st bout didn't seem like a walk in the park either)--I wish they could give us some insight as to how he may have contracted it again.  Had he been following all the protocol?  Had he been travelling?

I wonder why eye protection isn't talked about more.  I've been suspect of that since the beginning.  I don't wear goggles, but always have sunglasses on, be it in the grocery store or outside.  Bought a pair of tight fitting safety sunglasses that are tinted silver so I can wear them if I happen to go to the store after dusk.

I would appreciate if these type if news articles would mention if these folks followed their "States" protocols prior to getting sick, what they think on how they caught the virus-communitiy spread, not wearing masks, never washing hands, house partying, bar hopping, traveling out of state, etc.

Then provide an explaination on how they think these folks reinfected themselves.

My personal opinion:  Just saying you can catch the virus twice through different strains means nothing to me if protocols are not mentioned to avoid a 2nd transmission.

Providing details and all pertinent information is not in their best interest.

How do you think you got it? Have you narrowed it down and care to share? This is really practical info for everyone.

@Mindy D  Well, unfortunately, this could complicate creating a vaccine. We have been hearing that the virus did not appear to be mutating.  This was encouraging for those working on vaccines and treatments.

However, virus history isn't on our side, for this virus to remain unchanged. It could eventually be the worst to mutate of all.  We can only hope it doesn't mutate into something even more ravaging.
