Just last January I bought all new kitchen appliances-frig, range, micro, dishwasher. Most are whirlpool brand and the dishwasher is LG.
The only thing that hasn't disappointed me is the refrigerator.
The dishwasher stinks, for real, the microwave has had repairs twice already and
today the worst thing has happened--the slide in range has an error code on the oven.
Looks like the earliest repair date is this coming Friday. thanksgiving is coming too soon and if they need a part or something worse I could be in trouble. I'm the host.
I didn't need to buy all new items but I wanted to update my kitchen.
Yikes.

Built in obsolescence. Manufacturers learned that they can't sell as many new units if the old ones never die. When I moved my dad off his farm in 2008, we sold a refrigerator and freezer in perfect working condition that my parents bought in 1948, before I was born!

I feel your frustration and I think modern appliances are junk designed to last a very short time. We built our home in 1988 and since then, have purchased 4 refrigerators, 3 ranges, 6 dishwashers and 2 over the range vents.
Two weeks ago, we replaced are 45 year old Gibson freezer. It still ran, but needed new door seals and the insulation panel on the door was coming loose. It was cheaper to just buy a new one. I do not think my new freezer will last as long as the old one.
Our landfills are filling up quickly. it's such a shame.

I wish I had been there to buy them!!
I bought a house in the mid 1980's and it had a 1940's gas stove in it. I had to have it serviced once, and when it needed it a second time (this was, by then, about 1993), I was told no parts available any longer. I bought a new one and am on the third one since. They just don't last.
I regret, as this was in the days before such easy internet searching, I had held on to it and looked harder and farther for the parts. The stove was beautiful, still looked like new and I've never had one since that I liked as well.

We have a new Kitchen Aid diswasher. I find that after the cycle if I do a drain it helps with the mustiness. I also keep the door cracked a bit. Sometimes I'll throw some bleach or white vinegar in it and run a quick wash cycle rather than spend the extra $$$ for the dishwasher cleaners. I will do that though. Rinse Aid has a rather inexpensive one and it does work. Stove is fine, an Amana bought when we moved in. Electric, never a problem, no need to replace anytime soon. New fridge 2 years ago had to have some hose replaced in the freezer, no problems since then. Microwave have had about 5 years. No problems and if need to replace won't spend a lot of $$ on it.
Good luck.

how awful for you! i hope you get things in working order in time for the holiday.
we've been very lucky with our appliances in our 20 year old house. we've been here almost 16 years and only replaced a garbage disposal and we have two in the kitchen.
they just don't make appliances the way they used to, that is very true.

The dishwasher is an easy fix.........IF you have an air vent, make sure the hose is not gummed up, now by buying a cleaning like affresh, finish or a host of others and running it in the machine will not only clean the dishwasher but the discharge hose...........IF you don't have an air countertop air gap, but have an inline air gap........well frankly you're stuck, that smell will always be there.
on the slide in....the error code is no biggie........sometimes that happens when the power has gone off and then come back on............but it should be telling you want the error code is and an online search will tell you want's wrong, it may be something you can handle yourself............................raven

I would unplug the stove for a few minutes, then plug back in and see if that resets the error code.

I'll agree about googling the error code on the internet. Sometimes its not a power outage but excessive humidity or static electricity in the air that can cause these error codes.
Hope the problem is solved with the repair person.

Pete....I understand your frustration. After my kitchen was completely remodeled, I purchased all new stainless steel appliances. The top model refrigerator has cracked drawers, the dishwasher has had repairs, the trash compactor is making a thumping sound and will have to be repaired. My old appliances never had these issues and were still going strong when I replaced them ( if I had known would never have gone this route). They just seemed more solid and well-built- same with a new washer/dryer. I'm convencied that products are not made as well. I don't know what the answer is as all of these products were top of the line well known products.
