My beloved 50 lbs dog Indigo has a bad case of arthritis in her right back ankle. A month or so ago, I stumbled over her (she always lays down in the way of everyone). I did not fully step on her back leg, but knocked it enough that she yelped. Not long after that, the ankle was swollen and she would not walk on it.
I took her to our Vet. He took X-rays. Nothing was broken, but he did see "bone on bone" and said it was likely arthritis, possibly caused by my knocking her leg. He gave her a shot, and pain and anti-inflammatory pills. She got a little better for awhile, but now she is back walking on 3 legs and it is still swollen.
What else can I do? Is she going to be like this for the rest of her life? I feel so bad that this was likely my fault. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I will call the Vet again, but I know some of you have dealt with arthritis in your pets.
