Need help with something from my childhood, foggy memory

I'm 51, and I believe this was a show I saw on TV in the late sixties, maybe very early seventies. I don't believe it was an episode of a particular series. All I can remember is a little black boy who lived in maybe New York City, lived in a tenement. He found a cat? Kept the cat in an old abandoned dryer? I can't remember much more, but for some reason that show has always been in the back of my mind. I'd like to watch it again, if available and if I can figure out what it was called, etc. Anybody else remember this and know more info about it.
