Need help with KOBO

Does anyone have a Kobo? I'm trying to download library books & instead of them going on to my Kobo, they are ending up on my computer. I have connected the kobo to the laptop, so don't know what the heck I'm doing wrong. Granddaughter has given me instructions which I'm following, but it's not working...Grrrr!
