Need help for Broadway tickets

DH & I have been to NYC many times with tickets to a show or play.  We always had our tickets ahead of time.

We have been given a gift card for 2 tickets from TKS, the kiosk on Broadway where low price tickets can be purchased for that day.

This is new for us and we aren't sure how to plan.  Should we stay in NYC the night before and try for a matinee, or get there in the morning and try for that night, and then stay overnight?

We are about 3 hours from NYC, and would probably stay in Jersey due to cost.  Can anyone familiar with how to best use this gift card and explain how it works?

I'd appreciate any advice!!!

Re: Need help for Broadway tickets

I would drive in early on Wednesday or Saturday morning, get tickets to a matinee, eat dinner, then drive home.

Or a Sunday matinee! I love going to the city on Sundays, on street parking is plentiful (for NYC anyway!).

Re: Need help for Broadway tickets

We usually attend a Broadway play each year between Christmas & New Years. We drive in to the city early in the morning. That gives us plenty of time to go to the Tickets booth & decide on a matinee play.We go to dinner afterwards & then drive home.

We used to spend the night at the Marriott Marquis but the prices have skyrocketed in the past 5 years. It now costs upwards of $500!! Not worth it because it costs that much for dinner & the play!! Enjoy!!!

Do not go to a matinee if you care about who is performing. If a show has 2 performances very often the "stars" do not go on for the matinee. Try to read reviews of  as many shows as possible before you go to the booth so you get an idea of what you want to see.  This time of year tickets sell out fast so get to the booth early.

Re: Need help for Broadway tickets

when are you planning to go?

I live within 6 miles and there's no way I might be visiting with all the protesting

Personally I might wait until DT has moved and Christmas is over the city is really crowded with Christmas shopping and D in the city traffic and 5th ave is a mess, spilling over all over.

as for buying the tickets

getting the tickets and staying over the night of might be a better strategy

Re: Need help for Broadway tickets

This gift card, from a friend who is in the hospital and cannot use it, is good until Dec 31, so we need to use it soon.

We have seen about half of the current shows, but as I said, have never used the TKTS booth.

We are thinking of going between Christmas & New Year's when DH has the week off.

Are tickets easier to get on weekdays?

How early is "early enough" to get into the line?

Must we know, before we get to the booth, the EXACT show we want, or can you select your show once it is your turn?

I appreciate your help!!

@Libbylady I would put the following website as a favorite in your phone:  TKTS LIVE.  This will show you what shows are available for purchase in real time.  However, if you go to this site at 11PM when the TKTS Booth is closed, it doesn't show you what is available the next day, it shows you what was available during the hours it was open earlier that day.  In other words, you can only get a real time look of what is available for sale that day if you check that site during the hours in which the booth is actually open.

I go to the city for work very often, and I've never waited longer than a half hour to get tickets.  I've been doing it for about 35 years, so I can tell you it's not that bad of a wait, even if the line looks very long.

If it takes 3 hours for you to get to the city, I would leave home at 7AM, get to the city and park, go to the TKTS booth to get your tickets, grab some lunch somewhere on 8th or 9th Ave, then see the 2PM matinee.  Some shows are doing 3PM ones on Sunday, so I would check the schedule here:  WEEKLY SCHEDULE OF BROADWAY SHOWS.  Hope this helps.
