Need help changing my avatar here

When I go into my profile on the forums and click where it says to change the avatar, it just brings up a white screen with the word 'avatar' on it.   There's also an 'X" on the screen. I've tried rebooting and updating my computer just now but still get the same message.   Can anyone help? Thank you.

Re: Need help changing my avatar here

@newjersey  I asked this same question about a year ago.  Here's the thread.  The answer is in message #10.  Hope this helps.

Re: Need help changing my avatar here

@NickNacknicknack, thanks. I tried the steps you listed but when I tried to download a pic I have on my computer, I got the message "Invalid File Type".  I don't know what that means.   The steps you listed up until the point worked - thank you again.   I now don't know how to upload without getting the "invalid file type" message.   This never used to be this hard to do.

@dooBdoo  Can you help @newjersey?  I had saved an old thread where I asked this question, and you were able to help me.  It doesn't seem to be working for turqoiselover though.  I haven't tried to change mine in a long time to see if it still works for me.

@newjersey

If your picture end in .jpg or .jpeg it will upload. So will moving pictures ending in .gif.

For instance, if the title of the image is dog in costume.jpg the file type will be acceptable.

OTOH, if your picture’s title ends in .png (which is a picture with greater precision) it cannot be loaded. HTH

@dooBdoo please forgive me for adding this.

           Hi, everyone!   I'm sorry for the delay...  I'm very far behind in my notifications.   Thank you, @NickNack, for providing a link to our "Customer Care" thread with instructions -- I'm glad it was helpful.😊   @LTT1,   Thank you for posting advice about the error message.😊

            I'll add just a little more on that topic...   this site sometimes is wonky about certain image file formats (they're indicated by the extension letters after the "." at the end of the filename, such as those @LTT1 mentioned).    Sometimes even the .PNG files do upload successfully here, by the way, so it's always worth a try.   Again, it seems to depend on the mood of this sensitive and frustratingly unpredictable website software.

            Often this site displays a message telling us the image file is too large, or as in this case that the file type is invalid.   I think the quickest way to try to fix the image is simply to make a tiny edit and re-save the image, then try adding the new image to this site.   Some people even use the quick-and-dirty method of emailing an image to themselves, resaving it from the email to their device, and then uploading it here.

           For instructions specific to the device you are using, an internet search of  something like "how to change image file format" for that device will provide step-by-step instructions.   For sizing issues, you also might want to try either an app (like the free "Image Size" app) or a website (one example is Imageresize dot org).

           @newjersey,  Your avatar is lovely and it puts me in mind and spirit of the coming holiday season!     @NickNack and @LTT1,   Y'all are fabulous!   We always can count on both of you to help other posters, and I hope you know how much you are appreciated! ~❤️~
