Need help IDing this thrift store find.

[ Edited ]

My DIL found this item at a thrift store today.  We aren't sure what it is or where it was made.  It's leather and  seems like a piece of luggage, but we're not sure. Can anyone identify it?

Is there a strap for carrying it? It makes me think of Morocco, but I have never seen anything like it.

A tooled leather trinket box? You don't give me any idea of how big it is. The tooled motif is Inca, Maya, Aztec...but it is not from any of those civilizations. It is not old. Can't be because it has a plastic zipper and machine made aluminum clasp.

@Mindy D   Mayan or Aztec is what I thought, too.

@house_cat   If it is large, it looks as if it could be a type of hassock or ottoman. The design does look Mayan or Aztec.

Could it be a carrying case for some kind of drum? It looks like it has a handle on the side. The zipper indicates that something is

meant to be put inside.

Knowing the size of it, would be helpful in guessing it's purpose.

It's a "Handmade Fadzai."  Suprised you didn't know that, House_cat! Joking!  (I surely didn't)

Never seen anything like it but there is one very much like it for sale on ebay!

 Search ebay for :
