Re: Need a new vacuum.....cordless or not?

I had to plug mine in to charge in the garage. It takes overnight to fully charge and lasts about 25 minutes on a good day..,12 minutes on others. I just hate that I fell for the hype. The best thing about the Dyson is the excellent suction..it will pick up anything...but can’t pick up much since it spends more time charging than cleaning.

Re: Need a new vacuum.....cordless or not?

Another vote for corded vacs. I hated having to leave the cordless plugged in at its charging station, as recommended by the manual; hated that the power you got fresh off a charge ebbed while you were using it; and hated that it wasn't as powerful as a corded vac even on its best day. You lose power with a corded vac only as the bag or cup fills and if the roller is slowed by too much hair around it.

Another factor is the disposal of spent batteries. Our recycling center stopped accepting batteries and CFL bulbs a few years ago, and we're told to throw both in the trash. I've found an alternative for the batteries, but it's a pain to get to and they don't take NiCads or lithium batteries.

AFAIC, companies selling cordless appliances should be forced to take the batteries or whole appliance back when its life is over and recycle or dispose of it properly, the way a lot of printer toner makers take back spent cartridges.

When the battery runs out of juice then you're done even though you aren't done cleaning. When the battery will not charge any more then it needs to be replaced, those are not cheap and the expired one goes into a landfill. Can you tell I'm not a fan of battery-operated stuff?

I know! @ECBG

What's even worse is when you go to replace a rechargeable battery, you find out that the battery can't be removed and replaced b/c it's suppose to be permanent! I can't believe some cordless appliances are made that way....throw the entire thing away when the battery no longer holds a charge...WHAAAAT!

Re: Need a new vacuum.....cordless or not?

I have purchased two Dysons, and both quit within 2 months. I took them to my local vacuum repair guy and he told me that they cannot be repaired. He said he sees them show up in his shop almost everyday and he hates to tell people to throw them away. When they did work, the battery life was short and the amount of suction seemed weak compared to my plug-ins. Maybe others have better luck with this or other brands.

Just take off your top and bra before you open the door. I guarantee they won't be looking at the rugs. Got to think strategically. Woman Wink

Re: Need a new vacuum.....cordless or not?

Just make sure you know what kind of carpet you have.  There is a super-soft, plush carpet out there and as consumers we often don't know.  The trick here is that not all vacuums will work "unable to push it" around.  The house we have now has a beautiful carpet but my really great Shark wouldn't move on it!!  That was the first I'd ever heard of a super plush carpet, and believe me I tried every position that vacuum had and it would not move!  Bought a vacuum specifically designed for these ultra soft plush carpets and the result was great.  No problem at all!

But all in all, my Shark is a great vacuum, runs rings around the Animal Dyson I used to own (and repaired to the tune of $170) to have it break again!
