Need Holiday Tipping Advice in Two Areas

[ Edited ]

First - I do my own fingernails, but I get pedicures about once a month or so. I've always gone to the owner of the salon. I give her a Christmas card (she is a person of faith and celebrates Christmas) every year with cash (equivalent to two visits). I address it to her, her family, and her staff.

She had an accident last summer and is coming in, but not doing nails. I didn't care about which technician they scheduled me with, but the first two months I had the same tech. Then I started requesting her.

I'm thinking about splitting my Christmas gift of cash in two - one for the owner and one for the tech I've been going to since summer. Or should I do more of 60% (owner and staff) 40% (nail tech)?

Second - We switched trash companies when a new one came into our area in January. DH came in the other night with a card that was taped to the garbage can. It was a Christmas card, signed, with an address printed on it.

Our previous trash company had a place you could add a tip when you paid online. This one doesn't.

The address is quite far from here. I will get a gift card, but I think it would be better to send it directly to the company, with - ATTN: name of trash collector - on it. They don't always come at the same time on trash days, and I'm reluctant to tape a card with a gift card inside to the trash can! In fact, I just wouldn't do that. What do you think?

@beach-mom  I think you answered your own questions quite nicely.

I would give the one who does the work (tech) the entire thing.

On the trash, ours is a city pick-up, so no notes attached and I don't believe they are allowed to accept tips, so no opinion on that.

Re: Need Holiday Tipping Advice in Two Areas

I tipped our trash and recycling collectors last week. A crew of 3 each, so 6 total.

'I had a card for each of them with some cash and a small thing of cookies each. I put them in separate ziploc bags and then a larger ziploc bag.  So, I had 2 ziploc bags with 3 gifts in each.

I was outside when the recycling guys came so I handed them theirs.

I taped the other ziploc bag to the top of the trash can lid and they got theirs from there when they came.  I also taped a sign that said "happy holidays" next to it so they wouldn't be confused.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

@beach-mom

Usually , salon owners do not accept " tips ".  Many yrs ago , one stylist whom I was a customer of for many yrs , eventually opened her own salon . I went to her to do my hair and went to give her a tip and she told me it is customary that salon owners do not accept tips .  The stylists who work for the salon  have an expense to have a chair in the owners salon.

Never heard of tipping  garabge collectors who are being paid  atleast  minimum wage .

I would tip the nail tech/ owner whatever you feel is fair. I have never tipped my garbage collectors, mail man, delivery drivers or anyone else. My trash is picked up by whomever drives the truck for the city that day, and my bill is paid online with no place for tips, my mailman I couldn't pick out of a lineup and as for delivery driver's, nope.

The garbage/recycling men here make very good wages.  They do not get out of the truck, using a mechanical "arm" to pick up the can.  If the can is knocked over, it's left in the street.  I don't tip.

I would give the nail tech a tip, not the owner 🤷‍♀️

ETA:  Does anyone have a female trash collector?  I don't think I have.

I’d give the tech the higher amount or all of it. As far as trash, we always gave a tip to our collectors & mailman when we owned a home but live in a condo now & the building gives a case of wine to our trash collectors & a monetary tip to our mailman & regular USPS & FedEx delivery persons.

Re: Need Holiday Tipping Advice in Two Areas

I only gift the person who does my nails.  If you really wanted to give to the staff something usually people bring in some goodies.  I can't imagine giving them a holiday tip if they don't do your nails.

I also tip my hairstylist with a gift card or extra cash.  I don't give to his staff except for the one who shampoos my hair that day.  I will give her a larger tip.

As for the trash company,  my friend who lives around the corner from me also got an envelope taped to the trash can.  We all use private trash companies in my neighborhood.  Our trash company didn't leave any envelope so I am not tipping them.

I do tip my mailman each year and I make sure he is working the day that I leave him something in the mailbox.

If i get a mani or pedi, i generously tip at time of service. No way am i paying an extra tip by the tune of 2x the equivalent of service.. yowza... at holiday time.

I have municiple trash service that get paid more than i do. Again not tipping, i have very little trash as a single person and they dont get out of the truck with the system they have.

The only person i tip at holiday time is my mailman and slip in more than he is  "allowed".
