Need Engagement Party Help

I have been invited to an engagement party for a relative. I have never been to one and actually don't think that I had ever heard about one. I have asked friends and my daughters and they weren't familiar with them either. Anyway, can anyone tell me about what to expect and what kind of gift would be appropriate?
