I have always loved and respected George H.W. Bush.I started watching all news stories about him in Canada white my son was little and I was often at home. There aren’t many who can live up to the bar he set.

Thank you, ms traditional.   Such a touching tribute.

Do we have any heroes of this sort left? I don't think so.

ETA:  I'm not thinking of just the heroics in wartime or the tenure as President.  I'm thinking mostly of character and the caliber of human being.

@golding76:  Yes, we do, I know a lot of them "normal citizens".

Hoovermom,

I am thinking of those who have the spotlight.  You are correct, though, in saying there are many private citizens who have admirable behavior and a worthy set of values.  They are aware of others and try to help where they can.  They are good people.  I have them in my own life, thank heavens.

I'm catching a bit of the service in Houston-- it's good.  Lots of scripture reading by granddaughters, excellent tributes from James Baker and George P. Bush, an appropriate emphasis on George H.W. Bush's faith, which was a big component of his character.

I've also enjoyed the use of some patriotic songs in the service. Loved hearing "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" just now - one of my favorites. (I heard the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sing this live several years ago and it was beautiful and spine tingling!).
