We will never be bullet-proof unless we decide to forgo our democracy and/or build an impenetrable dome to cover our country. Our enemies would love us to do both.

Yes, we can. But we do not want to for many disgusting, political and plain stupid reasons. So we will pay and pay and pay the highest price till the last straw will brake the camels back ( no pun intended!!! )

But tonight I am going to see the ballet in NYC.  I refuse to fear these animals.

I don't believe any one has suggested something so radical and silly but there are common sense things that can be done to lessen risks.  Unfortunately, they're all shot down by judges with attitudes that most Americans don't agree with.

@suzyQ3

And given the many avenues that enemies have to enter and create havoc, inpenetrable is impossible.

Most Americans want other badly needed regulation but that somehow goes nowhere.

There is a lot we can do to keep our citizens safe, but as soon as ideas are brought forth, the opposition starts screaming "racism", etc.  Discussions come screeching to a halt and nothing gets done, which results in even more deaths.  I think that 'diversity' is more important to some than citizen safety.

It's been proven that people with ill will towards this country will use our laws against us.  I have no doubt that the diversity program gave opportunities to a few, but it's become clear that others have exploited it to their advantage which is the case with this latest attack.  We have to smarten up very quickly.

Re: NYC terror attack

[ Edited ]

I remember when WW II ended and my uncle came home.  There was a huge celebration on our block.  I was only seven and had no idea how it ended.  All I know is my mom was horrified.  I finally did find out about what we used to call "the atomic bomb," and why my mom was so upset.  She saw what would eventually come.

I remember seeing a blimp in the sky one day during the war and went screaming home because I thought it was a bomb.

I remember the nuns telling us if the Germans came, they would shoot us in the street because we were Catholic.  I was five.

I remember the blackouts and the sirens, and the black window shades, and my mom putting a dish towel over the radio dial so we could listen to it without transmitting light.

I remember hiding under our desks during school drills, and the fear everyone had that the Russians were going to bomb us.

I remember the young boy children we went to school with and their fear of being drafted (which they were).

I remember the Cuban Missile Crisis.

In short, I remember being scared all the time.

Now I'm afraid for my children and grandchildren and the world they are living in and how much worse that may get.

There will always be fear.

There will always be people who take advantage of a program, a benefit, a position of power, etc. That doesn't mean we get rid of the above; it means that we always try to improve our methods, hopefully without sacrificing our ideals.

I wanted to add that I don't think "ideals" are superfluous things that we can get rid of due to fear, fear-mongering, and those who exploit those fears.
