Careful, she's highly regarded around these parts... Wink

Wink I noticed that.

She is well educated, the hair on fire crowd is not, and it shows.

A big problem is dealing with how people perceive the virus. Whatever scientific fact/s one is armed with no one will be able to quell the public's fear today, tomorrow or next month. It's going to take time, especially when the nature of Ebola is so visually violent. It almost evokes a visceral response.

IMO the only way the public is going to accept medical staff and civilians traveling in and out of Ebola stricken countries is to impose a mandatory quarantine. I don't see any way around it at this point. Businesses cannot shut down simply because these folks who end up having Ebola were patrons. People cannot be put through the worry that they may contract Ebola because they crossed paths with an infected individual. That is unfair.

A quarantine period would also alleviate suspicions about West Africans living here. There's an article in The Guardian about Liberians finding themselves in a very difficult spot in the US. A woman spoke about her daughter sneezing and eventually the girl was asked to leave the school. There are reports of Liberians being told not to come into work. Liberians are forming a campaign #IamLiberianNotAVirus.

Look at Noel spinning. She knows what she argued about the other day has now come to pass. ASYMPTOMATIC at the airport over there can still mean someone is INFECTED.

There is a big difference between being infected and being contagious. Big difference.

That's true but that wasn't the argument being made. Some were saying that taking a temperature at an airport would help nothing. Duncan made it out of the country and came here and so did this dr. If they are INFECTED, they eventually will become symptomatic and INFECTIOUS. Meanwhile, they are already here in this country.

I haven't been spinning anything. It seems you haven't understood anything said, which is also obvious with your conversation with PD.

Yes, you are spinning. People tried to explain to you and others a few days back that taking a temperature at an airport over there (or here for that matter) is worthless. Evidence, this dr that now has 103 temp and gastro issues.

You are contradicting yourself, and you are the only person who said that. Not people, plural. You were also wrong. Someone with a fever would be suspect.

Reading comprehension is a skill. Some people have it and others do not. I know you've been caught as well as others, but at this point, it would just be easier for you to admit you were wrong.

It sounds pretty uneducated to call anyone with an opposing viewpoint ""the hair on fire crowd."" If you're confident in your opinions you wouldn't be so rattled by the various posts that are questioning the doctor's poor judgment.

Yes. And get used to it. It is here to stay. At least over time for years to come. Wink We are a global community with people traveling all over the globe frequently.

And there will probably be cases of other viral hemorrhagic diseases that arrive here again as well. In fact, they already have.

You sound almost giddy about that. That's more than a little disturbing. {#emotions_dlg.scared}

Not giddy. Just realistic. In addition, I am not one to get all panicked about this.

I am giddy about the success that we have had treating Americans here with ebola though and hope & pray that carries through for this doctor. We now have had 6 Americans with ebola that have survived. So my thoughts are with him right now as he takes on a battle for his life.

Well said. We can not isolate ourselves from Ebola any more than we could isolate ourselves from the Axis threat 75 years ago. We are part of a global society.

The doctor was very selfish not to quarantine himself. The businesses he went to will now suffer losses. BTW....this disease has nothing to do with the Axis threat of 75 years ago but nice deflection on your part. {#emotions_dlg.rolleyes}

And by the way, I don't believe the vast majority of the American public has anything to worry about in terms of being exposed to ebola. But even after they get this epidemic under control in West Africa under control....and let's hope that is soon, there will be other sporadic outbreaks of ebola and marburg there. There will always be a potential for a case to arrive here whether there is a known epidemic or not.

We already had a case of marburg here in 2008. There wasn't a big epidemic in Africa that proceeded that case arriving here either. And by the way, no one exposed to that patient contracted marburg.
