Parents are hauling their kids to inappropriate places/situations all the time, it follows that they would do the same with pets. I admit I am surprised that they asked and didn't just show up with the pet!
There is a portion of society where it's all about them!

Just curious....Did they tell you what was wrong with the dog?

Many people can barely get a fork to their mouth without a road map.

Hmm, this thread got me thinking. Where would these people NOT take their dogs, cats, kids....To visit an Uncle in prison? Do they allow "service animals" in jail? How about a black tie charity event in a downtown location? In a Hospital to visit a sick relative that has a contagious disease? An ICU?
My sister asked if she could bring her sick dog who was incontinent and vomiting over the Holidays. I told her to stay at home with the dog. I would miss her, but, not cleaning up after the dog.
The question posted is, "why would they ask?" well, today, in this environment, it is all about me, my needs, my wants and my desires. Not about anyone else. Most unfortunate. Oh, by the way, the ADA only recognizes two kinds of service animals, dogs and miniature ponies.

You are absolutly 100% correct on that.
But, the thing is, people can bring pretty much any animal on board a plane, and the airlines will not ask for documentation of proof that it is a service/therapy/emotional support animal.
A person can bring their pet python on board a flight, and claim that it is their "emotional support" animal, and the airlines won't ask for documentaion/proof.

It is an odd question. You can tell they were stressing out over leaving the dog. I understand that. Some people would not understand missing a social event because of a sick animal, but our pets are important to us. Could they have left it in the car so they could go out and check on it? Or one person stay home with the dog, get a dog sitter, attend the party only for an hour. One person leaves early, the other stays at the party. Don't attend at all. There are options.

But that's not really fair to the dog either. The car can get cold. The dog probably would be more comfortable at home, in familiar surroundings.

I saw a girl shopping atNordstrom. She was holding a dog. She couldn't even carry her items. She had a sales person following her to hold on to the things she wanted to buy. Then she asked the sales person to go into her purse and pull out her credit card. The dog was shaking.
That reminds me of women who carry their little dogs around in their purses like they are accessories.
