@kivahwrote:

@Shanus

Turning on the tv has gotten me depressed. Can't even watch the local news anymore. I spend more time on-line now.

@kivah  Rarely good news, but I do feel it’s necessary to stay informed just not during the only meal DH and I have together.

The news isn't very often happy but I still watch to stay informed.I just wish that only the facts were reported and no mini series.

@dex  Staying informed is quite important, so is conversation during dinner...not about disturbing news.

I stopped watching ages ago. I don't like the way they have a habit of wanting to show  as much gore ,as they can get away with

It's bad enough to listen to this stuff ,without have to see the horrible things they were subjected to

I can't turn it off in my head, and watching stuff like this, won't change what happened

@cherry  At the evening meal, it is nauseating to see much of the destruction, shootings, war, etc. We stay informed the rest of the day. It’s quite pleasant having quality time w/ your significant other without that distraction.

I can't imagine not staying abreast of what's going on and the only way to do that is to watch news everyday because skipping a day can mean missing something very important.  Heck, things even change from morning news to afternoon or evening news.

What I have decided to do is not watch news too late at night because it hinders my sleep, I think.

@Mmsfoxxie Very well said.

@Blingqueen023  Posters are misunderstanding that we do keep abreast of news, just not during dinner.

Please read my OP. I have not stopped watching the news, keeping up what’s going on in the world around me. We must stay informed. I can read it in the paper, watch tv news morning or at noon.

I stated that I began keeping the tv news off during dinner...it is upsetting, distracting and hinders conversation.

The thread has taken a wrong turn into no news watching, people on cell phones during dinner, not watching news before bedtime, etc.

@Shanus I wasn’t responding to your post.  You have misunderstood.  I was responding to another poster’s post.  Please make sure you have the correct poster.  Thanks.

I watch many different stations for news as that is the only way to get an overall picture of what is happening in our country and in the world. It is easy to only watch or listen to stations that feed one's own belief system but in reality it is limiting and promotes ignorance and lack of critical thinking skills to listen to and parrot back only what one is told by those who of the same belief system.

We all need to educate ourselves as much as possible and sometimes challenge our beliefs for the benefit of our country and world. To pursue ignorance is a sad statement that benefits no one including oneself. We all live in this world and have a responsibilty to make it a better place for us and our children.

I understand your position perfectly, Shanus.

I read the news first thing in the morning.  Written material is generally more in depth than a television program of limited duration.  Besides, there is a larger swath of information available if you read from multiple sources with multiple points of view (or bias).

Like you and your husband, I prefer to take my meals in peace.  An actual conversation with your dining companion is far more rewarding than any flickering electonic screen.
