excerpts from Westfield Leader..

WESTFIELD — Roosevelt Intermediate School art teacher Frank Thompson has been charged with possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance (fentanyl), a crime of the third degree; possession of drug paraphernalia and endangering the welfare of children after a November incident which occurred in his classroom.

Following an investigation of this incident, a quantity of a suspected controlled dangerous substance and various items of drug paraphernalia were located in a closet in the classroom. Thompson was charged on January 5, 2023.

Following the incident, the art room was closed for a number of days. Principal Brian Gechtman sent an email to parents several days after the incident to let them know that a former teacher, Mrs. Goldstein, would be returning to teach sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade art classes effective immediately.

The email offered little information about the incident other than to label it as a “medical emergency experienced by one of our staff members.” It went on to note that “although the length of Mrs. Goldstein’s assignment is unknown at this time, we are excited for her to join us.”

The email also disclosed that all art classes would need to be temporarily relocated, and asked that parents “respect the privacy of the staff member.”

Thompson has been served with a complaint-summons through his attorney and is scheduled to present himself to Central Judicial Processing on Wednesday, February 1.

he will probably get his job back as well, maybe just go to rehabilitation and then back to the classroom.

What a sad, traumatic incident to happen at a school!

Where I taught they trained drug dogs and the sherrif's department often trained.

@chrystaltree   I wish the man had chosen another site to nurse his addiction, but does someone so addicted even think that way?  Do we even know a career in which addiction doesn't exist, in which each member of the group knows no evil?

Once upon a time, I thought I did ...  but we all know what we call stories that begin "Once upon a time...." don't we?

Michael Jackson was in his 50s. I'm sure there are plenty of cases. So many overdoses are caused by other drugs having fentanyl as an undisclosed ingredient.

@PickyPicky3 Michael Jackson was never alleged to use fentanyl and did not die of an overdose.  He died because he was being administered the anesthetic propofol without appropriate monitoring for oxygen intake.  Propofol is a common anesthetic used for surgery, but its use requires constant supervision because propofol can cause the anesthetized person to stop breathing, which is what happened to Michael Jackson and caused his death.

Re: NJ Art Teacher Overdoses

Until they get control of the tidal wave of fentanyl and other drugs coming into the country, things like this will continue. Fentanyl is so lethal, it is fortunate students did not come into contact with it since it was in the closet of the classroom. I hope the teacher is no longer employed there. He doesn't need to be in a classroom.

Fentanyl is also commonly used in anesthesia. DH just had it when he had some cardiac procedures. He was horrified when he saw it listed on his paperwork.
