NFL Doesn't Need the Help Anymore...

The FCC voted to stop the "blackout rule."

They were the only sport that had a rule that if the games didn't sell out, they wouldn't be seen in their home markets.

GOOD...they don't need federal help any more. They appear to be doing well w/o gvt. assistance. This just applies to cable and satellite TV. They have to vote as a league on network games.

Always wondered why the National Hockey League blacks out games here in Nebraska when they are being played on the East Coast. Still ain't got a straight answer from anyone connected to the NHL or my satellite provider.

Re: NFL Doesn't Need the Help Anymore...

It's my understanding that the NFL hasn't changed their rule. They just no longer have a stamp of approval from the government, if they decide to take that action.

It sounds like the NFL will have to re-strategize their revenue source model in order to keep market share, black out or no black out. They want the stadiums full for (of course) many reasons, but one is to enhance the tv viewing experience; yet it would appear that ticket sales may be dropping due to more people choosing to stay at home in front of their big screen. I'm sure there are other reasons, too, but this is a discussion about the ability of the league to mandate black outs.

It does seem kind of silly to count ticket sales done on the cheap to people that can afford to buy several thousand, in order to call games a sell-out, even though many times they aren't used. Kind of defeats the purpose of having the "roar of the crowd" as a motivation to watch the game from home. I guess the real question is, why the low ticket sales in some markets, and does a black out really solve that, in this day and age? (And is it fair to those who can't get to the game). Up to the league to hammer out, but maybe this will allow for greater consumer/affiliate push-back to this huge machine we call the NFL.

I know they were very happy in Cleveland yesterday when they were making the announcement on local news.

Now if only the NFL would let our area (the U.P. of Michigan) be a dual market so that those of us who are Detroit Lion fans could see their games instead of being forced to watch the Green Bay Packers.
