Not a fan of NYC. Overpriced and congested.

Press conference on now.
It effected about 62K people, in Manhatten, west side. ConEd says over 70k people were effected. They expect power to be back on for all by midnight (eastern). They still don't know what caused the outage. A cheer from the crowd went up as the lights came back on.

@lovesallanimals when did you experience looting during a big blackout? I have lived in NYC since 1984 and have not had that experience. We had the big northeast blackout of 2003 and the Supersorm Sandy blackout of 2012 (ConEd power station flooded and went out of business), and I dont recall any looting. Thankfully, I am not affected by this blackout, knocking very hard on wood!!!!!
It looks like the blackout is contained to midtown west, small part of uws area, incuding Times Square - no theater this evening), affecting 42,000 customers which is like a lot more people.
It was a transformer fire, ConEd says most people will have power restored this evening.
I think it's hardest on the tourist, staying in Times Square.

CEO of ConEd said at a press conference (on now) said that it is (highly) unlikely that a fire in a manhole could cause this power outage.
They still have not determined the cause of the outage yet, they will investigate the cause after power has been fully restored.

I hope people stay safe.

Just a few blocks.

The CEO of ConEd said that it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that a fire in a manhole caused the power outage.
