And we're off! Every time there is an impending storm we go through the same thing. There are the people who think it is no big deal and the people who do. If you are tired of hearing about the storm, change the channel. No one is forced to watch the weather channel. Others welcome getting updates. Imagine how scary it would be if communications got cut off and people were sitting ducks wondering what was going to happen next?
It is always better to be safe than sorry. How would Mayor Bloomberg look if he did nothing and New York was devastated after Irene? Those same people who were complaining about inconvenience would be saying that they received no warnings and New York didn't step up to the plate, didn't do enough and failed the people. This goes for all the people in authority in all the cities involved.
How many times have you heard people interviewed after a disaster hit their town say 'I've lived here for 40 years and I've never seen anything like this'. Just because it never happened before is no indication it won't happen this time. The people in Joplin, Missouri can tell you that. I am sure there are plenty of Florida residents who can say the same thing too. The levee in New Orleans collapsed one day. Hmmmm, now who would have thought?
People don't have to act like maniacs over this, but I think totally blowing it off is not a good idea. I live in Tornado alley and my whole family lives back in the northeast. Some of them take it seriously, and others blow it off with that 'it never happens here' attitude. Poking fun at the media and the weather channel is foolish. They are doing their jobs. They are trying to keep people out of harm's way. Of course they can never hope to get everyone to listen, but if the more people they can keep safe, the better.
I hope everyone comes through this safely. If this storm turns out to be much less of a threat than originally thought, it will just be a lucky break from mother nature and not the media, the weather channel, the mayors and everyone else involved being idiots for making a big deal out of nothing. That's how I look at it. I hope this thread doesn't sound mean, as it is not meant to be at all. Just my observation.
I've said my piece, now good luck to all in Irene's path. Be safe.
