Those days are long gone...it's cheaper to just have clerks at centralized registers.

Fewer employees and more profits mean more $$$$ for the executives, who rely on stock options.

our department store prided itself on personal service---clerks and cash registers in every department---and the salespeople would help in other departments too---all knew the merchandise
