Like others here, I've had a cashier at the '15 items or less' checkstand try to coax me over and I just won't go. I know that as soon as I'm unloading my cart there that others, for whom that checkstand is meant, will show up and I'm a bad guy. I'd rather wait.
I try to b e considerate of those around me. I'm amazed at how many cashiers who will thank me for bagging (if there's no bag person there), and I just say that I can't stand here looking stupid while somebody else does all the work. Plus, I like the way I bag, anyway. ![]()

That would have been irrelevant. If she were still short of money after counting out her change, I probably would have offered to pay the difference so she wouldn't have to put back an item. Yes, that would also have been a nice thing to do. All I'm saying is that I would have waited to see how much money she needed, if any. Maybe she would have paid by credit card.
After all the complaints here about shoppers holding up the line, my take on this is that giving her the money would have helped more than just this one woman. It's not about the money to me. It's about being nice, and also helping to move the line along so everyone can get on with their day.

You would think she would have had all her stuff ready and all together in one spot...and known ahead of time about what she could afford.
I think that's harsh. I'm very organized, and I have everything ready, so I always go thru the line quickly. But I'm not a mother with two screaming kids, financial pressures, and maybe a whole other assortment of problems. We have no idea what her day had been like up until then, and we have all had days when the best-laid plans fall by the wayside and everything goes south. When my kids were young, I had plenty of those, and I'm sure there were times when my challenges inconvenienced other people despite my best intentions. I can't imagine judging her - That seems unnecessarily harsh to me.

Never enough check out options in the grocery stores... And then, when the grocery store management does deign to open another line, they go to the person at the rear of the line rather than the next person in line... Never fails, and it also never fails that whatever line one gets in, it's invariably the slowest or the one where some sort of price check, coupon check or 'special' attention is needed...

Once in a great while, there will be someone who forgets something and will ask if it's ok if they run back and get it.

This, I can relate to...
But I won't do it if it will hold up the line. If I'm waiting in line anyway or the cashier has just started ringing me up, I might dash to retreive a forgotten item, but otherwise, I don't do it...

I buy bulk legumes, fruits, nuts and grains for my bird at Whole Foods and I am always careful to write the product SKU number clearly on the twist tie. OMG the cashiers LOVE me and fawn all over me every single time. They SO appreciate it ... always makes me feel good to make them happy. Lol.
