So that other discussion had me thinking about my poor male chiuaua. He is 15 years old and has never peed in the house. He was well trained when I got him at the shelter at age 3. When I moved in my (now) husbands home his brother and dog was living with them. That dog would pee on the rugs. His brother and the dog finally moved out and we ripped out all the carpeting and some of the wood underneath and put down new carpeting and flooring. Almost immediately my dog, that has never peed in the house before even when the other dog was, started peeing on our new carpet. I have a really good carpet steamer that I've been using to get it up but I know some smell has got to remain. It seems to me now that he is unable to hold it like he use to. He does it mainly at night. He use to wake us up if he needed to go at night. Now he just goes. Closing the door to the bedroom at night has help but sometimes he'll wander in that area when I'm close by and can take him out. If I see him start I'll say his name sternly and he'll stop and head for the door. My vet said it's just him getting old. He said to just do what I'm doing and give him extra love (no worries there :-)) And he would never forgive me if I made him wear a diaper :-)
