@Magicrat    I heard several reports and none mentioned the state where the problem occured.  Are you sure it was California?  I would think it unwise to mention the state.

Yes, the winner bought the ticket at a gas station in Altadena CA, about 40 miles from me.  No word on the person's name, or if they will even be identified.

The owner of the gas station also got a nice check ... for $1 million.

Identifying the winner also depends on the state.  In Wisconsin, where we lived for 14 years, the winner will be identified per their lottery rules.  In Texas, where we now live, the winner can opt to not be identified.  When we win (see how optimistic we are?), we won't be identified.

WRONG. Powerball drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday evening at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Time, at Florida Lottery headquarters in Tallahassee.

@Tinkrbl44    According to this morning's report on CBS, in California, A lottery winner cannot remain anonymous.  I wouldn't like that.  I wonder why?

They also said the snafu occurred in one of the Northern Midwestern states.  I was half asleep and can't remember which.

The winner will suddenly have a lot of friends.  A lot of NEW FRIENDS..and probably some "long lost" relatives!

I wouldn't like that, either.  In some states, a winner can remain anonymous.

I can only imagine how this negatively affects anyones life when two billion is the prize.  They would have to immediately go into hiding.

Unscrupulous people would be looking for ways to extort money .... kidnapping a relative?  A scam?

All I can say is .....  I hope they get VERY good advice, skip the lump sum payout, and have the majority of the $$ put into a trust ... or something.

In CA, they can reveal the winner's name, but no other information about them.  A nice story from a relative of the retailer who sold the winning ticket:

Shout out to the billionaire: It cost me $75 and the cost of two newspaper ads to legally change my name in PA. For two billion dollars, change it and enjoy your new life.
