Re: My TSA rant

[ Edited ]

I believe the price of a ticket should include 1 free checked bag.

I seriously do not believe waiving the fee will have a great effect on the time it takes to go through security.  Before there were baggage fees, travelers still carried everything (but the kitchen sink) in their carry-ons.  Then the excuse was they didn't want their baggage to get lost or they didn't want to wait at baggage claim.

We need more screeners in more lines.  The biggest problem is travelers who do not abide by the rules.  How does a person forget he/she has a gun in his/her carry-on?  How does he/she not know there is a 2 liter bottle of water in his/her carry-on.  Why wait until it's your turn to take off your coat, shoes and belt?

Baggage fees are huge money maker for the airlines.  They won't waive them just like they won't re-configure the seats to give us more leg room.  It would cost them too much.

YES, we ALL agree we need more screeners!  TSA has indeed identified this as a problem.

But the logistics are:

--it is estimated that 5000-8000 more screeners are needed to handle the volume of summer travelers

--TSA graduates 200 new screeners a week

--100-125 screeners QUITE each week

There is a problem that is going to have to be addressed beyond

'we need more screeners'

In the meantime the airline industry is annoyed that planes are flying at less than capacity, they are spending time and $$$ re-booking travelers as every day HUNDREDS of people are missing their flights.

Perhaps we should hire a goverment task force to study the problem. :-/

Bad me for saying we need more screeners and more lines. I've been duly scolded.

I just heard on the news that 400 people missed their flights at O'Hare Field in Chicago this past Sunday, alone. Waiting in long lines would irritate me to no end, but missing my flight would really tick me off, big time.

I have been planning a trip for mid fall, but will wait before making any concrete plans till I hear how all this is going closer till time for my proposed trip. Geez.

Yes, 450 people had to spend the night due to missing their flights.

The airport "rolled out cots" to accommodate the stranded passengers.

ugh!

For the price of a Southwest ticket, you get TWO checked bags!  I just recently traveled through some busy airports and the lines were longer at the baggage check than they were at security.

I do not mind waiting if it means my plane won't be blown up mid flight.  People need to give themselves plenty of time at the airport these days.  I usually arrive 1 hour 45 minutes before my flight just to be on the safe side.

You have sacrificed nothing and no one.

I don't like the long lines or baggage fees, but I also have no interest in having the government tell private business to change what they charge, even temporarily.  Certain government regulations are absolutely necessary but when the government starts interfering with pricing decisions, that goes too far.  When possible, try flying on some off peak days and times.  It is amazing how much difference that can make.

I agree with goverment and PRIVATE business.  However the goverment (taxpayers) have subdized the airline industry by the BILLIONS.

Provide some details please. What airlines and how much and for what and are the subsidies recent or from years ago when government controlled fares.

With the latest Egyptia Airlines tragedy, I would think waiting in line is worth your life should there be a kook with explosives boarding your flight.

@Puzzle Piece- I travel a lot, mostly international and have no problems with TSA.   My husband and I leave extra early and have ample time to clear security.  We do have extra time and I have no problem getting a bite to eat, doze or read a good book while we wait.   I have found security more daunting in other countries and actually much more extensive.  I put safety first, always and could care less about my wait time.  Just leave home early.
