This month I will have traveled twice from Rochester NY Airport to Orlando. The first flight was last week for my grandson's college graduation, with the second coming next week for my granddaughter's high school graduation. I have made that trip many, many times since they moved to Florida in 2001, so all my experiences have been post 9/11.

I've always enjoyed flying from ROC. It's well designed and lines have never been a problem...UNTIL LAST WEEK. My husband and I arrived at the airport at 5am for a 6:45am flight. The security lines were out the door. I had never seen anything like it at an upstate NY airport. I wondered if we'd make it through in time for our flight. We got online after checking our bags and made it through but we saw others running like mad, trying to catch their flights. Some were holding their shoes in their hands, not wanting to waste a second putting them back on.

We have the same flight next week. I expect the same mess. I agree that the carry-on situation has gotten out of hand. I suspect the airlines will solve that one by eventually charging for them too. However, Rochester Airport has privatized their security, so after seeing the horrendous lines there for the first time ever, I don't think that privatization and outsourcing security check-through will solve the problem. All I can say is that I'm glad next week's trip to Orlando will be the last flying trip we take for quite awhile. This year's summer vacation will be a car trip to Québec.

@Vivian, the airline I fly on most of the time, Allegiant, already charges $25 for carry-ons, and $50 each for checked bags. I'm waiting for them to add a fee for my handbag . . .  The add-on fees (for seat selection, boarding pass, bags) now exceed the initial ticket cost.

I have a friend who flew recently from Cleveland to Denver.  She arrived at the airport 2 1/2 hours before her flight and missed it because of the long line.  It was over 8 hours before she could get another flight out.

The last time I flew was about 2 years ago. We arrived at the airport 1 hour before our flight which was the recommended time.  The line was huge.  I have no idea why this happened but they opened up another line and started pulling some out and luckily DH and I were ones that were pulled out. Basically, they checked nothing.  We were carrying our luggage on because we were only going on a 4 day trip.  They never looked through our luggage, just put it through the scanner.  We both had to walk through the scanner and DH had to have his palms checked or swabed. That was it.  We were done in less than 5 minutes while the other line we were in originally was barely moving.

I've been hearing the airports are asking people to arrive 3 hours prior to flight but I've seen many cases where the lines aren't even staffed by TSA 3 hours early.  What a mess.

Apply for the TSA pre check frequent traveler program, and you can avoid the hassles.

Not everyone is eligible for that.  In fact, they try to give it to me every time I fly, but I have a joint implant, so can't use it.

I did not know that people with joint implants could not use pre check. I have been using it but just got a knee replacement. Bad news for me.

My husband has joint replacement in his hip and uses pre-check.

I agree that we don't like long lines here for anything.

However, should something awful happen - the noise folks would make!  Why didn't they have someone checking things or have more precautions in place, and on and on.

I will wait in line.

Pre-check lines have been long too.  I will not travel via plane until the pace is picked up....I'll car it......

The government does NOTHING well. Add unions in the mix and you have a ticket for disaster. There is not a shortage of agents. They reduced the force due to having too many employees and the word was immediately put out for a slow-down. Got it now?? The sad truth.
