My PC won't recognize my iPad as a device- help!

I've been using my iPad fine for months. I have the camera connection attachment/accessory thing where I can plug the attachment into the iPad, put a memory card into the slot and upload pictures directly on to the iPad.

This morning, I tried connecting my iPad to my PC to synch- it's been awhile since I've done that.

As soon as I plug the USB into the USB port, I get a message on my pc screen saying "Camera Connected" and then it asks me which program I want to use to open my pictures. When I hit cancel, that message goes away. Then when I go to iTunes, it won't bring up the iPad as a device, but gives me a message that says "this iPad cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started."

I noticed that when my iPad is on this morning and the screen is locked, at the bottom of the locked screen the little Photos icon is appearing on the lock screen. If I press on it, it brings my photos up- have never seen it do that before.

So I tried actually connecting the Camera connection accessory to it and imported in some photos from a memory card hoping that it would clear the confusion that the iPad is having with my PC. That didn't work.

I've been reading the Apple discussion boards and can't find anything on it. Can anyone help? I think the iPad thinks the Camera connection kit is still attached, but it isn't. I've tried turning it off and on and have restarted my pc, but that didn't work.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?
