I have had this happen a couple times but I just ignore it. My poor brother-in-law had a bad experience with it though. A telemarketer or whatever got his phone number and was using it to place calls. He got a call and answered the phone and some man started yelling and cursing at him to quit calling him. Brother-in-law finally got the gentleman calmed down enough so he could explain what was happening. Thank goodness for answering machines!

Here's a weird one I got today. Some lady from a State Farm office in Florida (I googled the number) saying they noticed I was looking on-line at insurance quotes and wanting me to call them if I had any questions or they could be of any help. Wasn't me. Sounded like she said the site I was looking was Speed Bump but I googled that as well and there is no such auto quote site that I can see. I've played the message several times now and it still sounds like Speed Bump to me but I don't know what she was actually saying, she said it quite fast.

Yes, this happens to me a lot. Apparently, the spoofers are using my number to call other people too. I get messages on my answering machine asking why I called or asking me to stop calling.
I get these calls on my cell too, along with about 10 scam calls from Maryland a day. Texts too.

@shaggygirl It sounds like someone had spoofed the State Farm phone number and used it to call you. You just can'f believe your caller ID anymore. I NEVER answer my home landline. I'm not usually there anyway, but if I am, and it's a friend, they will start to leave a message and I will then pickup.

@HerRoyaLioness YES!! I have had it happen to me. You know it's impossible that you are calling yourself, but I was still tempted to answer the phone just to see what I had to say! ![]()

I did call the phone company (to no avail) and report it. There is really nothing that they can do. I still don't understand how they can put a man on the moon, but they can't stop cyber crime.
I love your nic by the way. The Lion King is my granddaughters favorite movie. I've been ordering hand carved animals for her from Africa so that she can have her own Pride Land.

I have an android smartphone and saw a software program that people can download from the play store that changes your caller i.d. to any number you want. That's how it's done. I wish that software would be outlawed. One day I received a call from some bogus number and I blocked it....the next call they had changed their caller i.d. to "remove your block," I was not about to answer and was stunned to see that the phishing scam can be done not only in numbers but letters too.

I never answer my phone but did this morning because I was right by it and was expecting a delivery.
I have to read captions so it takes me awhile. he/She said "hi grandma this is your grandson. " (I'm aware of this scam). I asked "who? And he repeated his full name.
Said he' d been in an accident and had stitches and needed my help, he was arrested.
I told him "good stay in jail". He started saying "No, no, don't hang up. " I did.
Immediately texted grandson and he is fine. He called my son in case he had the same call. 🙄😞

To anyone besides to OP who hasn't heard of this:
Your phone rang, and your own name and number appeared on your I.D.?
Well, step right this way into the current century. Its called spoofing and has been going on for at least 5 years.
The only thing that bothers me is that folks actually answer it. All that does is affirm your gullibility, making your number more valuable to those who buy & sell numbers seeking folks who'll answer without being sure of who's calling.
Do you have a second phone?
If you just can't resist seeing who called you, call the mystery number back from that second phone. It usually goes to a dead number or some vague recording asking for money such as an unnamed 'charity'.

The good thing is, you can put your own number on 'block' because there is no way you would be calling your own number from your own number. I see it every now and then on my 'missed calls' but I had put it on block the first time it happened.
There should be something done about the spoofing #s thing. It's 100% wrong and it really irks me that nothing is being done about it. Nobody doing legitimate business is doing this.
