I was scrolling through my FB page, when I came across a video of a news helicopter flying over my old high school, because an armed gunman was seen running across campus!
They locked down the school, and did a search, but the person wasn't found.
Thankfully, no shots were fired, and no one was hurt.
Back when I graduated from the school, all we had to worry about then was kids bringing knives on to campus.

As commonplace as this has become I still am horrified by each occurrence.
Back when the earth was cooling and I was in high school the worst was chewing gum in class. A very few got in trouble for smoking cigarettes under the football bleachers.
Following first my children and then my grandchildren through school has been like watching history in the making.

When I was a Sr. in HS, one of the girls in my English class was caught chewing gum. Her punishment was that she had to stand up in front of the class with the wad of gum on the end of her nose for 30 minutes. I was horrified as were most of the class. The gum kept falling off of her nose and the teacher kept saying put it back on your nose.
One time when I was in Jr. High woodworking a classmate boy was singing the JELLO jingle & got caught. His punishment was to sing that jingle until the class period was over. I live in S. WI.

I'm so glad it was such a non-event. I swear I'll take my "good old days" when all at that time we worried about was what to wear, being on time to catch the bus, and talk of boys.

My son's school was on "yellow alert" this week after a student said that he saw another student wearing a bullet-proof vest. False alarm, thank goodness.

This is so sad and scary. People sure have changed over the years.
I went to a catholic school where kids brought guns and bows and arrows to school on the bus for gun club. We were allowed to smoke outside of the building in designated areas with parental permission.
We had no problems back then. If you got caught with drugs or alcohol at school or at a school sponsored event, you were immediately expelled. No second chances.
today, the school is super strict. Students are not even allowed to carry cell phones to class. If they need to make a call during the school day, they must use the office phone.
They are fined if they are not dressed correctly. They will be expelled for bullying or any violent behavior...even verbal outbursts.
It is a crazy time we live in, for sure.
