My Observations While Grocery Shopping Today

Early this morning, I decided that I needed to go to the grocery store, and stock up for the next couple of weeks.

The store wasn't crowded at all.

They were not monitoring the number of people people going in and out when I was there. Maybe they do that later in the day when it's busier, I don't know.

Most of the customers were wearing masks and/or gloves.

There weren't any lines on the floor to direct flow of traffic.

There was a limit on the number of eggs that one could buy.

There was a limited selection of toilet paper, and it was limited to one package per customer. I picked up one 18 roll package.

What surprised me was they were completely sold out of Shake n' Bake.

When it came time to check out, there were markers on the floor of where to stand.

From what I saw, people were observing the six foot distance between each other.

Everybody seemed to be in a pleasant mood.

I spent about $130 for food that should last me about three weeks or so.

At this particular store, you can still bring in your own bags, yet at some other stores in the area, you can't.

As I was pulling out of the parking lot, I noticed a home made sign on a fence in front of a house that was across the street.

It said, "Today is a nice day. It would be a shame to ruin it with an apocalypse" .

Uh, okay.

So, those are my observations from my shopping trip today.

Re: My Observations While Grocery Shopping Today

I was at Sam's and Lowe's today.  There were young people who were not wearing masks or gloves. I saw several senior citizens who were not wearing masks. I don't like having to deal with gloves and masks, but I don't want to be sick so it's important. I suppose those who  aren't taking things seriously think it will happen to someone else but not them.

@sann Whether they're young or old and they're out shopping among others not wearing a mask, maybe they can buy a shirt that says "I care more about me than about you."

Seems to me that's their message.

We go to our local Jewel supermarket every Tuesday around 10 am.  We've had no problems.  Not crowded, shelves pretty well stocked.  We do not wear masks.  I think about half the people in there did.  We bagged our items in the bags we brought.

On Thursdays, we go to Trader Joe's.  They control access.  And they provide the bags.  Again, no problems.

In and out of both stores in less than 10 minutes.

So far so good!  And it looks like this situation will continue at least for another month here in Chicago.

It doesn't help when the stores allow this kind of thing to happen! DH had to go to Tractor Supply to get bird seed, and a man came in and was not wearing a mask and when an employee stopped him, this person told him he could go anywhere he wanted.  The employee called security and the man was escorted out of the store. Good for them.

On the other hand, we went to Vons last Friday and they had these big Red signs on the end of each isle showing the flow of traffic.  Some shoppers ignored them and went about their business. Not one employee did anything to stop them!  If you're not going to inforce the rules, why bother!

Re: My Observations While Grocery Shopping Today

I was at our Food Lion at 7 a.m. and there were only 3 other shoppers, all with masks.  All the store workers had masks.  No clerks to check out, everything was through the self scanners.

I really like that, no one touches my goods, just me.

No toilet paper or any paper products.  I have a 48 pack from Costco from first of March as safety stock; I was just checking.

Inventory looked low but I got everything I wanted; there were some limits on eggs but otherwise the shelves were fuller than my last week's trip.  I try to buy just what I need.

Re: My Observations While Grocery Shopping Today

Yesterday was my 3rd senior hour shopping trip to BJ's since they implemented it about 6 weeks ago. Things have shifted from some shoppers wearing face masks initially to almost everyone wearing them yesterday. Yesterday was also the first time I saw them deny entry to a young woman who was there with a senior citizen. Some of the narrower aisles were clearly marked with direction arrows in bright yellow masking tape. Spacing was clearly marked at the deli and at check-out. While they had most items (except tp and other paper products), selection was limited. I went yesterday because my Aunt needed more Ensure, but I'm going to stick to going on Tuesday in the future, as they seem to get deliveries on Monday nights. So far, I've been able to get everything we need, so I'm happy and very grateful for the senior hour.

Re: My Observations While Grocery Shopping Today

I have asthma.  It's hard for me to breathe through those things.

However, I do wear it depending on where I am.

Today I went to my thyroid Drs ofc.  He didn't have one on.  Some of his nurses did and some didn't.

I did put it on most of the time.  I had to call my pharmacy while there, so I removed it.

My Dr is old.  He must be at least 70 years old.  He's what I call 'old school'.  We talk politics, you name it.  Most of the time is spent him fussing at me for things I was supposed to have done/tested and didn't.  He made me promise (and wrote out another prescription) to get the cortisol checked.

I see some people wearing the mask and some don't wear it.  I mostly just go to the grocery store, pick up carry out food and the pharmacy.  Pretty much what I've done ordinarily.

I don't think there's much difference in the amount of people in the grocery store.  Maybe a few less.

I still don't see toilet paper on the shelves or the kind of foam soap I like to use to wash my hands.

Other than that....the shelves are pretty stocked.

@Eileen in Virginia, I hope that they checked to make sure that the senior didn't have to have a helper.

Re: My Observations While Grocery Shopping Today

All of the stores here started the arrow thing but for the most part our stores have slowed down so they don't mean much. If I'm at the wrong end of the aisle and I need something a little way in I"m going to get it. I will go back out the correct way. I think getting out of the store quickly is probably a better option over making people walk up and down every aisle to get stuff.
