To those who stated they have the "locking lid" style -- you can pause the cycle at any point prior to "agitation" starts.

My Whirlpool top loader is 2 years old not sure of the model but has this feature.  Just push the "pause button" for 3 seconds, the machine will stop and UNlock lid.

To restart just hit the grey pause/start button. 

Hope this helps. I've done it many times lately after someone told me what to do!
