My Experience With Frost Guard

I had a Frost Guard from about 2 years ago, I didn't love it and decided to retire it (I gave it to my nephew) and bought the recent TSV with the side mirror covers. The windshield cover was better than the previous one I had, it was longer and has the flap you can put inside your car. I live in NYC and we got about 10" of snow, so I thought it was the perfect time to use it. I put everything on prior to the snow. I went out this morning and had a heck of a time getting the mirror covers and the straps off the car. The straps were frozen to the car and the toggles on the mirror covers were frozen. It took me awhile to get them off. The shield it self was kind of frozen to the windshield and quite heavy with all the snow on it. I would never put it in my car (I was cleaning the car off on my driveway) as all the snow and ice was sticking to the shield. I think this works well for a small storm, but not a big one.

Re: My Experience With Frost Guard

I think you have to start with a completely dry windshield, otherwise the FrostGuard will freeze to the glass. If you forget or that's impossible, running the car with the de-icer on or the air turned to the windshied for defogging should help loosen it up.

I use a brush or a broom to push heavy snow off before taking off the FrostGuard. Spritzing lock de-icer on the elastics might help them unstick. And if you can think ahead and bring a big garbage bag with you when you go to the car, you can just loosely furl the FrostGuard and put it in there until you can bring it home to dry out over a shower railing, if you don't have a garage or other outside space.

All that said, you're right about big storms, they sort of overwhelm all our nifty hacks. I've found FrostGuard is ideal for the winter chore I hate the most, scraping ice off the windshield.

I love mine that I bought a couple years ago and it's worked great for me. I try and remember to put it on before a storm hits and I've used it when out running errands when I will be parking for awhile. No issues with it.

@Jordan2 ... I had the exact same experience .... when they demonstrate it on the Q they have a few snowflakes on top of it on the windshield... of course it comes right off!!!! ..... This thing does not work for a lot of snow .... it's more trouble getting the Frost Guard plus the snow off of the windshield than just brushing the snow off of the windshield without the Frost Guard.

I'm just wondering if - since it's named "Frost Guard" - it's meant to keep frost off your car rather than snow, as I can see how it would quickly become unwieldy in larger accumulations.  If that's the case - saving us from having to scrape frost - I'd say it's a novelty at best.

It's main job is to keep ice off, but it works great for snow too.

Re: My Experience With Frost Guard

I gave each of my sons one of these for Christmas a couple of years ago.... both said they were way too much trouble for what they were worth...  that they could scrape the ice off their windshields far faster than it took to fiddle with the Frost Guards (and the sticking!).... off to Good Will they went and I imagine that many of them will end up at thrift shops....

Re: My Experience With Frost Guard

I got my good use of Frost Guard since I purchased one last December.  I think it was a TSV w/free shipping.

I use it every night to keep the frost off my windshield.

I had no problems w/the side mirror straps freezing either.  Maybe because I tucked them inside the pockets  We've had wind chill temps of 1 degrees in NJ.

Held up well in the snow too.  I brushed off the top layer of snow, flipped the rest off, threw the guard in the back seat & off I went, while everybody else was still cleaning off their cars & windshields.

Furthermore, I have not scrapped ice off my windows in 44 yrs since I discoveredScreen Shot 2017-02-10 at Fri, Feb 10, 2017-7.50.48 PM.png

Love mine. Have one for each car.  Used the this past week during the blizzard and they saved me.  Guess its just personal preference.

Re: My Experience With Frost Guard

I have purchased two Frost Guard shields - the first one last year and another one this past December.  Both of the elastic straps have broken - the first year I mended it just to get through the winter.  The new one - purchased in December broke too.  I used it twice, both times there was wind.  When I went out in the morning it was flapping all over the windshield, with the piece still inside the car but the rest of the shield blowing around.

I live in a 55+ community and several other residents have the Frost Shield which they use regularly.  They have had no difficulties.  I'm disappointed because it is a great concept and makes it much easier to start the day - no cleaning the windshield.  It's too late for a return to QVC but I will not be ordering this item again.  It is a quality issue as I see it.
