Complaining about the DMV is a great American pastime.  Unless you needed 4 to play gin rummy while waiting, I don't see the point of taking so many people with you to share in the suffering we all endure at the hands of out taxpayer-supported "services."

My sister took me as a favor to me. I don't think because we were four our wait was so much longer. It's funny my sister 's birth certificate of course had her maiden name, they said she needed either her passport or marriage license. She thought she was out of luck and wasn't going to get her license renewed. Anyway she calls her husband and asks if he can bring her passport to her ( he was off, he had a funeral to attend). Well he brought her the passport ( he said anything for my girl), by the time he came the doors were locked, they let him pass it to my sister through a turnstile. By than they had already called her number, she was given a new one, the woman said don't worry, it will go quickly. So she gets called, gets her picture taken, eyes tested, sits for a very short time, gets called up, has her paper work processed and is done! Meanwhile her two daughters and myself wait like another 3 hours to be processed. I guess it pays to forget something!

Now that you mention it, there were maybe 5 people alone there.  Everyone else was a family.  The teens taking their driving tests had the whole family there, others who don't have child care had babies and toddlers.

Don't get me started on the people there in pajamas, robes and slippers.

Am I missing something here? I was planning on renewing my drivers license online. I have no plans to go down to the DMV to do this unless something has changed...??

Re: My Experience At The Department Of Motor Vehicles

Anyone surprised to find I met new friends, talked to a lot of people but didn’t get the star one.

Thats OK, it bought me time because, due to my age (73) I had to renew in person.

First inadvertent to get a new eye exam...done...then new glasses..done..was supposed to get cataract operation..NOT DONE..

But I did get the renewal license.  I’ll go back sometime in January.  I’m so freaking excited to present MY credentials...you see I found all of my very, very old pay information/stubs from when I worked for the government at the Pentagon...wait for it..in the years 1965-1973!

My my social security number is plastered all over these “official” government papers.

That’s how long it’s been since I’ve had a ‘pay stub’.

Anyway, I love meeting and talking to strangers.  By the time I got up there I could write a short story about the wonderful people I met waiting in line.

We were a mixture of accents,  ‘colors’, sizes, and, yes, genders.  We laughed about how some would check the blocks...we laughed about the lines...and so on.

I walked out of there even more in love with my country than I thought possible.

Happy that so many people could come together to ‘ jump through the hoops’ necessary so we could drive, drive to as much of a variety of places as we are people.♥️👌

@Jordan2  I guess some locations are more organized than others.A lot of my friends go to the Medford location & we've all had the same experience. There is a lot of people working behind the various counters & the numbers are called quickly. Those with appointments go to the front of the lines.
Another friend went to the one in Massapequa with an appointment & told me it took her about 15 minutes & the place was jammed.

You went during Christmas week, a lot of people to the week off and they went in too.  I think you chose a very bad day to go.

Here's a tip:

Sign up for an appointment on their website. No wait & they do keep the time you selected.

@SilleeMee , come October 2020, you will need a Real ID or Enhanced driver's license if you want to get on a domestic flight. It also allows you into Canada and Mexico, only by land or sea. It also allows entrance into federal or military buildings ( I'm not 100% sure on this). I think if you have a passport you can use it to get on a domestic flight.
