Toilet paper is a nice, modern innovation.  Too bad they don't seem to be making it anymore.

LMAO!!!!!   We need a national day of celebration to honor the inventor of TP!

My DH said hunters used leaves when out in the woods. Corn cobs were also used.

Most of us have used neither.

@SeaMaiden  corn cobb? How? lol. Do you mean corn husk? That´s sort of silky so it might work. I think they sell the husk also.

When in a jam, some use the empty toilet paper roll.

@Mz iMac  My grandparents' outhouse had Sears catalogs, corn cobs and toilet paper. You pick your favorite. I remember being noticing when we would drive in the driveway only to find my grandmother had forgotten to close the door when she entered!! Smiley Frustrated

@PA Mom-mom,  I doubt she forgot to close the door she just wanted to be able to breathe.

Re: 😬 My 95 yr young mother told me today.......🥺

I just read these to a 94 year old.

She said you were wealthy to have the sears catalogue. They used leaves, pine cones , corn cobs , pine cones. Then she said you used about anything.
When asked about corn husks she said those were used but real seasonal.

I asked how the corn cob was used. She said it was very effective after a big job.

Then she cracked me up with saying TP was the least of her fears. She was always watching for spider bites and chicken pecks in her south bound regions.

As I was laughing she told me if her son using the wrong pine cone. He used a fresh one with sap on it and got his cheeks stuck together.

My 93 year old mother grew up in Brooklyn , so there were no outhouses (I'm calling her tomorrow and will ask) but I remember the old fashioned WC with the pull chain at my grandmother's.

My grandmother lived on Rivington St, the lower east side of NYC. Her bathtub was in the small kitchen - with a metal cover. She had a tiny bathroom and the toilet had a pull chain (no sink). There was a bathroom in the hallway - on each floor, of the apt building, She lived on the top floor, 3rd floor. I grew up in Brooklyn and there were no outhouses.
