Re: Music in Stores, Pro or Con?

I worked in a market that played music..all kinds....all day long...and when the music wasn't playing...they were advertising something...or they were screeching on the pa for a department to take a call....

It was so frustrating working there and was more then happy when i was able to retire...

I now shop at Walmart and there is no music...and no one yelling on the pa for someone to pick up a call and no advertising in store sales...what a pleasure to shop there....

Re: Music in Stores, Pro or Con?

I prefer no music.  This time of year is the worst.  I enjoy Christmas songs, but it becomes mind numbing when that is all you hear everywhere you go.

I haven't turned on my car radio since Thanksgiving b/c the radio stations are playing Christmas songs 24/7 & the other stations are playing songs I don't like.

Re: Music in Stores, Pro or Con?

I just remembered about one day when I was at my bank.  This was a number of years ago.  They never play music in there, AFAIK, except for an elongated period before christmas.  Well, they were blaring this music and when I got up to the teller I asked her how it is being in there all day with that music blaring.   She whispered to me 'it's just awful because it's the same few songs, over and over and over, all day long'.    I can't even imagine!

Most of the time I don't hear it unless a song I recognize is playing. I take my ipod and play music I like while I grocery shop -- it makes the experience so much better!!

First of all, music doesn't cause me any distress.

Unless is loud rap with lots of disgusting (verboten) words.

Re: Music in Stores, Pro or Con?

Most of the time I do not notice it unless it is too loud. I like all types of music too so different types fo music doesn't bother me except for techno. I cannot stand that.

One store that I remember in particular was Abercrombie and Fitch. My daughter used to shop in there occasionally when she was in high school. We went in there one time and the music was so loud and the store was so dark and smelled like they had fumigated it with cologne that I had to leave. I am not exaggerating when I say I felt like I was in a club. The music was so loud you could feel it and it was techno too. Ugh.

Re: Music in Stores, Pro or Con?

I have no problem with reasonable music in stores/restaurants, but I don't like the screeching women type anywhere - especially in stores. Much prefer instrumental music to vocals. They could play Kenny G all day and I'd stay just to listen.  And I certain would not leave a store because of country music. What's wrong with the only true American music out there?  Got a problem with old dogs, cheatin' women and pick up trucks?

HOWEVER . . . . a year or so ago Belk had a MAX department installed - that brash line from another famous line.  They put it right by the front door, and the rock music was blasting so loud you couldn't talk in the front of the store. You had to scream at the sales people to be heard.  They hated it even more than the customers did.  In addition, the store music was still playing.  Impossible situation.  Thank heaven, the MAX stuff didn't sell here so they removed the entire department after a few months. After that experience I can tolerate almost any reasonable music anywhere.

I don't mind it unless it's too loud. I have been in some stores where the music is way too loud, like our Sephora, and I had to leave because it was not an enjoyable experience........

I normally don't even notice it if there is music playing.
