I saw this six minute video on my Facebook page, of a guy who went for a jog on a trail in Utah, when he happened to come across a mama mountain lion and her cubs.

Being a protective mama, she "escorted" him away from her babies.

The guy did the right thing, by staying upright, walking backwards slowly, making noises.

If he had crouched down to pick up a rock, he would've made himself smaller, and that's when she would've attacked, same thing if he had ran.

You never run or bend down to pick up something.

You maintain visual contact, back away slowly, make noises, and try to make yourself as big and scary as possible.

When mama felt that he was far enough away from her babies, she broke off the pursuit, and ran back to her cubs.

The guy was not hurt.

He might have needed a change of shorts afterwards, (so would I!) but physically he was uninjured.

@Anonymous032819   It is known that staring at a dog is a threat to it, so would assume that to do so with a wild animal would be the same, will have to look into this.  These cats have been seen in the hills where I live, walking through neighborhoods, hope I never see one, have seen many other wild animals.

Re: Mountain Lion Stalks Utah Hiker

We went to South Africa in January and went on 10 safaris.  So glad we had that wonderful vacation before the world went into turmoil.  Anyway, the guides on the safaris did NOT have guns, as I thought they would.  Lions and leopards can and did walk right past our Land Cruiser.  One strict rule was to not stand up.  With everyone seated, the entire vehicle and humans look like one big thing to them, and are too big for them to eat.  Also, the guides look for changes in their behavior, and would take some sort of action should they think we were in danger.  Best vacation I have ever had.

Humans continue to encroach and trespass on land that once belonged only to wildlife.

Where do we expect them all to go?

I have no real sympathy for the hiker, just glad he was not hurt, because then the game officials usually go after the poor animal.

Hope mama mountain lion can raise her babies in peace.

Was he filming this at the same time? That would be the last thing on my mind to do.

@GenXmuse

Yes he was.  I'm with you - that would have been the last thing on my mind at that point.

I saw this on the news last night.  If you watch the video right after this one where they interview the guy, he says that he finally bent down and threw a rock at the mountain lion.  That's when she ran away.  Very scary!  It shows him throwing the rock in the video after the long one.

Who filmed him throwing the rock?  Was there another hiker?

@FancyPhillyshopper   I agree with you.  When I saw the clip on tv, I said to my DH that the man put the poor momma at risk.

The man stated that at first he thought that the mountain lion kits were kittens, and he stopped to take a picture.  The mom used great restraint in not harming him.

She was just protecting her babies.  I felt so badly for her as she had used a great deal of energy and calories which she probably needs for her family.

I wish that humans would not be so stupid and disrespectful of wildlife.

I'll get off my soapbox for now.

Re: Mountain Lion Stalks Utah Hiker

I love trail riding so I'm one who enjoys being in the woods.  We never purposely disturb wildlife, just enjoy seeing it as we ride.

What this mountain lion did was very scary because of the prolonged nature of the pursuit. I kept thinking if this happened to me, it would've been hard to stay calm for that long.
