Okay, what's the courtesy on this?:

I like the left lane on a divided 4 lane highway. I go at least the speed limit or (5 over usually) . People tailgate me and act like I am in the wrong for not doing 80. I don't like the right lane because that is where there is merging traffic from the on ramps and that can get hairy if there is a semi on your left and someone is s l o w l y coming onto the highway.

Thoughts?

When you are driving in the right lane and a car is going to try to merge into the traffic it is polite for you to move over to the left , if you are able to, and let them in. However, the car entering has the responsibility to slow down or stop if there is traffic in the right lane, and then they may have to wait before they can safely enter. I learned to drive in Pittsburgh and this is a huge issue there because the hills, valleys and rivers make the highways twisty and the entrance ramps often you can not see the actual highway until the end of the ramp so it is imperative that drivers entering be prepared to stop .

If someone is on my tail, I either speed up or move over. Depends if there is a lot of merging traffic, I don't want to be over there and just try and keep up with traffic. I move over as soon as I can and then move back if there is more merging traffic.

My BIL (a traffic cop) would call you a sight speeder. someone who allows the other speeders around them to push them into also speeding.

Thank you hh. I do always get over for merging traffic. I find that they usually are timid and often can't decide if they are going to come in or not!

Just because you speed up doesn't mean you are speeding. I consider traffic laws more of general suggestions rather than hard and fast (no pun intended) rules. Let's face it, cops speed all the time when there is no cause, besides maybe day old doughnuts on sale at the local coffee shop.

Re: Motorcyclists and older drivers

I haven't read all of the responses but from my own experience:

I commute a great distance daily on a major interstate, and traffic is very congested for a great part of the way. The majority of motorcycles I encounter are weaving in/out of lanes around trucks, cars etc. to just get a bit farther ahead. I see no signals nothing. They just literally weave and that is of course when they are not doing a bat out of heck when there is no congestion. When traffic is at a standstill they are not, they are darting in and around the other cars so they can get that little bit ahead.

I am sure many if not a lot of cyclists do not drive in that manner but unfortunately the ones I have encountered for the most part do.

The most easiest going people on these roads, who are the kindest, lets others go, do not speed like a demon are the huge tractor trailers/18 wheelers. I have only encountered ONE in my couple years of driving this road that was the worst rudest driver ever and not far up the road after he cut several people off, he sat along the road with his hood up..KARMA LOL!

Well in these here parts pardner, you can get a ticket for going 5 over. It's not a suggestion where I live.

Re: Motorcyclists and older drivers

To tag onto what Coupon Queen was saying, I think it is the inexperienced hot shot motorcyclists that give bikers a bad name. Some people on bikes really do NOT know what they are doing and they are a danger to themselves and others. (ANd yes, I used to ride motorcycles a lot with my dh).
