I used to ride with a couple boyfriends in Kentucky. One had a BMW and the other had a Harley. I really only dated the Harley guy because of the Harley.
Loved it. Nothing like riding beautiful country roads on a good bike.
There are a lot of bikers here, and I have to say that I rarely see one riding recklessly, but I see reckless car drivers every time I'm on the road, many of them.

IMO and experience, motorcycles have caused much upheaval, demise and fall of marriages and families. I'll never forget when my brother purchased a motorcycle he must of been close to 20 yrs of age. A group of his close friends had motorcycles, so he bought one. He owned the bike for 2 weeks, went on his first big ride with the boys (country roads), they came across a horrible motorcycle accident and saw a decapitated body (RIP). My brother sold the bike right after that, and my mom, dad and I were extremely relieved and happy about that.

I have spent a lifetime with serious, responsible motorcycle riders. I have also (and much more recently) spent a different lifetime with motorcycle riders that don't seem to understand they are riding on motorcycles and the world is not their oyster so to speak . . . for me, those that responsibly ride motorcycles understand that the best defense if a great offense so they are always very aware of their surroundings. Unfortunately many that ride these days do not always follow these guidelines and also to be honest many younger riders take their lives into their own hands with incredibly irresponsible behavior. Those ninja bikes (aka crotch rockets) haven't helped.

Nothing much I could have done about it--First dh got one and he never had driven one. His reason to save money for it was a long drive to work. He didn't give a complete stop on his way to a job interview, there was a cop watching. Just lucky he got the job. My son has a Harley. He broke his collarbone on the freeway when younger. Called his buddy to help, not us. They ride inbetween cars and the cars don't see them when they want to turn.

This week alone, there have been two deaths in our area due to motorcycles. One young man had an accident four months ago and just succumbed to his injuries.
The other was a person who collided with a deer and neither one survived.
Many ride motorcycles because they enjoy them/some for cheaper transportation/others as a sport, and many more reasons. I rode my motorcycles for many years because I enjoyed the feeling of the fresh out in the open air feeling and it was a relaxing feeling.
There are risks in many activities some choose as something they enjoy doing, in spite of certain levels of risk. I have many friends that still ride them because the too enjoy riding.
Two of them are doctors, 1 of which has been an ER Doctor for many years. In the winter he plays goalie in my Adult Hockey League. In nice weather here in the Midwest, he rides his cycle.
Every year something many do not see as dangerous, about 3,600 die while doing it? That is about the number of accidental drownings each year. In comparison, about 4,000 die in motorcycle accidents.
Everyone has to way the risk factors connected their enjoyment and weigh the pleasure verses the risks. I am guessing many others die doing something thdy enjoy, they just don't make the news. Yes, riding a motorcycle can be dangerous, but so can driving or riding in a car.
Just my perspective as I have been one to involve myself in severao things with higher risk factors than others, and while I have paid physical prices, I am still among the living. I can still hear my late Mom, "Johnny, that is so dangerous".

there is nothing worse imo than driving along on the freeway at a high rate of speed and all of a sudden here's a motorcycle speeding up , darting in and out of traffic and driving between lanes.
it almost makes my heart stop. i've seen some very careless people out there, but i don't want to be hitting and possibly killing someone. i don't think i would get over it.
where i live there are large groups on motorcycle riding enjoying the weather and the beautiful scenery. these i think are the responsible ones. they are a pleasure to see.

Tales from the E.R (tonight)
My oldest had a 20 year old patient who had been hit by a Semi while riding her motorcycle. The good news is she's alive but her limbs are atrophied and she can respond to stimuli.
