Mothers Day is for mothers?

I don't get the whole gift giving process for Mothers Day. Since when should husbands buy wives Mothers Day gifts or cards? And I mean gifts FROM the husband...not from the kids. What about gifts from other family members? From friends? I think only gifts from kids to their moms are appropriate for Mothers Day. JMHO
