According to this article, nearly 5,100 planned store closures in the U.S. have already been announced this year, and are projected to reach more than 8,600 by year-end. As a result, 20-25% of all malls and shopping centers (220-275) are expected to shut down over the next 5 years. This will have major ramifications.

So sad. I think people spent more money on phones and other tech than fashion . The malls are mostly fashion and yhe designers are so boring lately. The legging and yoga pant trend does not cost that much and lasts a long time. In addition people no longer have to dress up for work so they only need one wardrobe.

Seriously, I can't remember the last time I went to a shopping mall. These days, the majority of stores I frequent sell food and/or liquor.

Summer jobs for kids are bad enough now. Keeps kids out of trouble, but soon they will have no place to go to work.

I do realize the impact of these store closures but I have, for about the last 10 to 15 years , been amazed at the number of retail stores and malls that are opening. It seems every time you turn around there is a new mall opening. They just opened a new mall here - all high end stores - very large - 2 years ago. So it doesn't surprize me at all that - after opening so many stores - so close together, some weren't going to make the cut. It does make me sad to see the empty buildings sitting for years sometimes.I think they build these malls and stores for tax reasons much of the time.

Both of the malls in the town where I live are undergoing major renovation. In one a new Whole Foods and a new Trader Joe's are going in. It has been a rundown discount mall (Marshalls, Ross, etc). Theaters are going in and Nordstrom Rack. Not sure what other stores.
The other has been completely gutted and it is going to be a mixed use with apartments, offices, large theater complex, quality restaurants, a new grocery store, health club, etc. I haven't heard what stores are going in but sure it is nothing major.

Alot of malls are going the way of mom and pop stores went years ago, we will see if things change in the future, no new malls in this area for many years.

I do not even remember the last time we went to a mall, and we have the Mall of America here, there were so many empty stores and even restaurants, but at least that mall has the anticipation of the amusement park to bring in the tourists in the summer and on weekends.
