The say Missy Frankling (olympic gold medalist) has to decide whether to go professional or stay amateur at age 17. I guess if she stays amateur she will be on a swim team in college and still compete in the olympics.
What I don't understand is what kind of a market is there for professional swimmers? I can't think of one thing a professional swimmer does that makes money. It's not like ice skating where you turn pro and then can participate in Ice Capades, or basketball/football where you play for a professional team. What am I missing?
